OK, now that that is over, let’s all act like normal people and start thinking about VD rationally.  Most people believe Valentine’s Day was invented by the fiends at Hallmark & the floral industry to bolster sales that began to ebb after the December holidays, while others believe that it was a day celebrating St. Valentine who married couples against the Roman  government’s edicts. Either or, Unless you live under a rock, you are probably going to go looking for a nice gift for your significant other or chance the possibility of ending up in the dog house. I’ve  got a few ideas that may or may not help.

While some ladies dream of a big, romantic gesture on Valentine’s Day, I am not one of them. Certainly if you had the means and wanted to fly me off to Paris for a romantic long weekend, I would be in heaven (I’d even settle for New York. Just sayin’.), but realistically, I prefer an acknowledgment of the day in a way that shows that my husband gets me. And that is the key, I think. I’m not into a lot of bling. I don’t care for roses, and although I like flowers, I am allergic to them.  Truth is, I don’t really want or need much. Flip Video UltraHD Video Camera.  Yes I know that Cisco discontinued them and let me tell you, mega case of the sads.  I am sick of trying to film myself for blogging things with my Droid in my bathroom mirror!  My mom says the shower head in the background looks like it’s growing out of my head when I do that.  I need to be more high tech.  Luckily you can still find them online.  The white and blue is adorable but that one seems hard to find.  Really any one will do.

Keurig Single-Cup Coffee Maker

Keurig.  I kind of hate how expensive they are.  I have tried to tell myself for Months that I don’t want one.  That I wouldn’t use it.  The same way I don’t use the coffee maker I have at home now.  (I don’t… I find myself running to Dunkin Donuts instead.)  But something about those k-cups… coffee, iced coffee, tea, iced tea, cider, cocoa…where does it end!  (It doesn’t!)  Damn you Keurig.  Damn you.

Things That Make Me Happy

Karen's Words Make Me Very Happy

The Beauty of Different by Karen Walrond  Karen’s photography is beautiful, but what really moves me about this book is her words. She explores all of the ways each one of us is beautiful, and reinforces to everyone that it is our unique qualities that make us beautiful, not the ways we struggle to make ourselves fit the mold of “normal” as dictated by our society. I think this book is a must-read for everyone. I display her book on my coffee table for everyone who comes over to see and ask about, I think her message is that important. In fact, my copy is so well loved that it now sports a broken spine.

Prismatic Globe Patio Lights – I recently became an RV owner. We have an annual campsite for our 5^th wheel where we spend weekends for six months out of the year. Everyone decorates their campsite with lights and fancy fire pits and furniture. These lights are awesome. I saw them at Camping World and instantly had a bad case of the wants. They come in a rainbow of colors and each globe is 6” in diameter. They are definitely big enough that I can follow them home after a few cocktails at the neighbor’s campsite, which is important. Having to make apologies in the morning for stumbling into the wrong trailer is awkward. These globe lights are not just for RV awnings, though. They would be great for a backyard patio.

VitaMix Blender – Ok, I know. $450 for a blender? But this isn’t just any old blender. I’m pretty sure I could grind up my car if I could get it in small enough chunks to fit in the container. With this blender I can make smoothies, shakes, sauces, and salsas. Oh – you can make those in your regular blender? But wait! There’s more. This blender also makes soup – hot soup! You put some broth and veggies and spices in the VitaMix, whirr it up, add a little cooked chicken, and voila! You have hot soup. It cooks with the friction of the blades. To go along with your soup, the VitaMix even mixes and kneads bread dough. I bet your Osterizer doesn’t do that!

Veronica Mars: Seasons 1 – 3 –  Spoiler alert: there are only three seasons of this smart, engaging show and that fact makes me sad. I came to this show really late. In fact, it was long off the air before I saw a single episode. It took me exactly one episode for me to be hooked. Yes, it’s about high school kids but it’s definitely not Beverly Hills 90210, the next generation. The dialog is snappy, the characters are well-developed, and the plots are engaging. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend spending quality time with Miss Veronica. Hint: it’s cheaper to buy the seasons individually than in the box set.

I live in Florida, land of sunshine, beaches, and year-round shorts and sandal sales! Usually the weather is awesome, but last year we had one of our coldest winters ever. I was wishing I had had a pair of these leg warmers. Wicked Skatewear sells these babies for $13.99 and man, do they look toasty. Not just for roller girls, you could totally rock these on a chilly morning, with shorts or a mini skirt, or even as extra protection under a pair of sweatpants. I’d have totally worn these everywhere last winter because I don’t really own a whole lot of actual “pants.” I do, however, have lots of booty shorts; these leg warmers would go with those, too.

And while we’re on the subject of legs, look at this beauty. Yes I know Halloween is over, but you’re looking at a woman who has a zombie family on the back of her mini van instead of the cute stick figures! Aaaaaaaaand on to the cute portion of our little list! “The Big Bang Theory” is one of my family’s favorite shows, and the exploits of Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, Howard, & Penny make us laugh every week whether it’s the nerds trying to fit in with the real world, or Penny trying to make heads or tails of the nerd world. One of the things we found most funny was the episode where Sheldon was sick and conned Penny into singing the “Soft Kitty” song to comfort him. Now we can all have our own Soft Kitty! This cutey plush kitty cat actually SINGS the Soft Kitty song! If I were under the weather, this would make me feel better in no time! Get it for your favorite TV fan for just $29.95.

OK, this one is kinda personal. For your tree trimming pleasure, or just for general decorating purposes, here’s a great gift for the roller derby enthusiast in your life! Nothing’s better than a personal touch.

2. Sephora Fragrance Sampler – I love a good perfume, but what I think is good is not necessarily what the sales associate at Perfumania thinks is good. Take the guesswork out by getting her one of Sephora’s excellent fragrance samplers. It comes with sample sizes of 12 favorite or 10 deluxe fragrances for her to try. Once she chooses her favorite, she can turn in her voucher for a full-sized bottle. Genius.

3. Maid Service – Forgive me if I’m being sexist, but I find housework usually falls to the woman (if that’s not the case in your life, bravo, buddy, you win at husbanding), so a respite would totally be in order. Major maid service companies like Molly Maid, Merry Maids and Maids.com offer gift certificates, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find one near you.

4. Personal Stylist Appointment – Make a woman feel beautiful and you’re in. Gift her with an appointment for a personal stylist to help her pick one outfit that makes her feel amazing. Stores like Banana Republic, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Macy’s offer this service for free. Just make the appointment and give her an AMEX or Visa gift card (make it generous) so she can buy the outfit. Don’t have these stores near you? Google “personal stylists” to find one in your area. They will charge a fee for their services, however, so keep that in mind.

5. A Porsche Convertible – Is there a car she’s always wanted to drive? Give it to her – if only for the day. Many larger areas have at least one exotic car rental place where you can get a Porsche, a Ferrari or Rolls Royce for the day. Send her out for an afternoon of shopping with her BFF or to great date night for just the two of you – in style. Weekday rates won’t cost you much more than a nice piece of jewelry, and it’s really a cool and original idea. You don’t even have to give me credit.
