My new favorite polish

I have a new favorite nail polish:

OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark

It’s almost black, but not quite.  It’s a very, very, very deep purple and I absolutely love the way it looks on my toes.  It makes me feel like I’m pulling off something a little edgier than my normal red (which is OPI I’m Not Really A Waitress Red thanks to Becky) or pink (which is rare and only worn if I’m wearing pink or let my daughter pick out my polish.)  But it’s not actually black because actual black looks a little too “I cover my walls with my own poetry because my life is so hard.”

Some women can wear an actual black and look sexy.  I am not one of those women.  But Lincoln Park After Dark is, I daresay, sexy on me.

Of course, as luck would have it, my favorite new nail polish is damn near impossible to find.  Locally, I’ve only been able to purchase it at nail salons, including an open bottle I paid $8 for because it was the only way I could get my hands on it.  (My husband bought a sealed bottle the same day, unbeknownst to me, from another nail salon.)  Online, this particular color isn’t available at any of my usual haunts.  The only place I’ve been able to find it is Amazon – for about the same price once you throw in shipping.

I know this.  Anyone with common sense knows this.  And yet, I allowed the saleman with spiky hair at a Sephora in West Palm Beach convince me that Sevin Nyne Tanning Mist was a smart investment.  In my defense, Sephorais supposed to be more infallible than the pope, and he showed me how it works in the store. (The spiky haired salesman, not the pope.)  Plus, Sephora has the best return policy you can ask for, so I figured – what the hell?

Hell.  That’s a good word for the Sevin Nyne Tanning Mist experience.

Fortunately, I was in a hotel room with Finn when I tried this product so it wasn’t my bathroom that was completely covered in a thin layer or brown goo.  Or my white sheets.  Or my white towels and washcloths.  It was, however, my white skirt that ended up with a few brown spots on it almost 24 hours (and one shower) after I’d applied the tanning mist.

But let me back up.

I stood in the hotel tub completely naked, except for a shower cap, with my legs and arms spread.  Finn proceeded to hose me down with the tanning mist according to the directions.  I was instantly bronzed, although there were a few splotches here and there where the mist had gathered more than I would have liked.  All in all though, Finn did a fabulous job with my application and didn’t even flinch when she had to get up close and personal with all of my personal parts.  The bathroom was an absolute mess, but the color looked great.  I was torn on whether or not I was in love with the product or wanting to return the aerosol can the next day.  I decided to sleep on it before making a decision.

The next morning, I woke up to find brown stains covering the pillows and sheets of the hotel bed, despite the fact that I’d dried myself with a blow dryer before putting on pajamas and going to sleep.  I hopped in the shower and waited for the water to run clear, which it eventually did.  When I stepped out, I was thrilled with how I looked, but determined to return the Sevin Nyne because of the god awful mess.  Hours later, my decision was confirmed when I noticed fresh transfer spots on my clothing.

It’s such a shame that this product doesn’t have a more practical application process or less of a transfer problem, because the color really is gorgeous.  In fact, I think it’s the best color I’ve ever gotten from a sunless tanning product.  The result was definitely more brown than orange.

Sigh.

I returned the $35 tanning mist and went home with my old reliable Clarins Delicious Self-Tanning Cream. It remains my favorite self tanner and the only one I would readily recommend to anyone, although it is $42 a jar.

That being said, my husband is using the GlowFusion Protein Tan that Finn recommended to me last year. I originally bought it for myself, but it never gave me the color I wanted and it faded really quickly and unevenly. But it looks fabulous on Jared and Finn. *shrug*  I will say that it’s much easier for Jared to get his back on his own with this spray than it is for me to do my back with a lotion.

I am also currently experimenting with Banana Boat Sunless Summer Color Self-Tanning Lotion.  I bought it on a lark while shopping at drugstore.com recently because it was on sale and had outstanding reviews and I was already getting free shipping.  I figured for $6.99, I can use it every damn day if I want to and not feel bad about really wanting to figure out a way to look tan without getting skin cancer.  And if it sucked?  $6.99.

So far, so good.  I have used it nearly every day and my only complaint is that it fades quite a bit after a shower, especially if you shave.  But, again, I’m putting it on like lotion basically every day and I just kind of look like a normal person who gets a tan in the summer.  I’m using the light/medium color shade because my natural color is Peeled Chicken.

I think I’ll use the Clarins right before I go on vacation, but will take the Banana Boat with me to keep the tan up while I’m away.

This stuff lasts forever. Seriously.

Hi, I’m Finn and I’ll be posting here from time to time while Britt’s off conquering the world. Or shopping. Why? Because I’m a giver, a goddess, a saint. Plus, I love to shop probably as much as Britt does.

I hate makeup removers. I’m not kidding. I’ve never used them, mostly because I can’t stand being blinded while trying to get my mascara to come all the way off. And then I discovered Deep Cleansing Oil from DHC. And the clouds parted and the sun shone. I tried it, I love it and I’ve never looked back.

Deep Cleansing Oil is made from ultra-purified extra virgin olive oil and does exactly what it says it will do. It takes off every trace of mascara (yes, even waterproof), liner, foundation, lip stain, whatever, then rinses clean. Just cleanse as usual afterward. You won’t find a single black smudge on your towels ever. And you won’t be left with a greasy face either. Yet it doesn’t dry you out. I’ve always been on the oily side, but as I’ve gotten older I’m finding my face is getting drier. This stuff has worked for me through it all.

The best part? It lasts and lasts. Just a squirt on your hand at night will get all your makeup off the first time. The six-ounce bottle lasts me at least six months. Considering that, $25 for a bottle is not bad at all. You can also try a smaller, two-ounce bottle for $12.50.

I’m really fickle when it comes to things like cleansers and moisturizers because I’m easily dazzled by interesting packaging and wildly inaccurate effectiveness claims (despite the fact that I began my career as an advertising copywriter), so when I recommend something like this, you can rest assured I am crazy in love with it because it works. I’ve been using it longer than I can remember. If they ever discontinue this stuff, I’m hoarding it like a Today sponge. Try it. If you don’t like it, send it to me.

Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Buffing Brush

My friend Megan introduced me to Bare Escentuals bareMinerals makeup a few months ago, and I have been in love ever since – with only one complaint.

I use the Bare Escentuals bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation and the Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil to set the powder.  My only problem to date has been that there wasn’t a good way to apply touch ups to my makeup through out the day.  You see, although the mineral makeup has the amazing ability to provide great coverage while being super light and natural looking – it all comes in a loose powder form.  In other words, it’s really, really, messy.

Much too messy to stick a pot of foundation or mineral veil in your purse.  Which sucks, because a quick retouch of mineral veil at 4:00 in the afternoon gives you instant fresh face.

Thankfully, the good people at Bare Escentuals have answered my prayers in the form of a refillable buffing brush.

You can get the Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil Refillable Buffing Brush with or without the mineral veil included.

The brush (with the mineral veil included) is $35 at Sephora, and is also available at Amazon.

The brush has a screw in pot that goes in the bottom of the brush.  If you only use the powder, you could conceivably fill the pot with that instead of the mineral veil.  I prefer the mineral veil for touch ups that don’t make my makeup look thicker.

I’ve been using my buffing brush for a few weeks now, and I love it.  I had to shake the crap out of it the first time I used it to get the powder into the brush, but after that I’ve had no problems.  I keep it in my purse and use it to freshen up my makeup the same way I used to with a compact when I was using pressed powder.

Bare Escentuals fans everywhere, you should definitely add this to your must have list.

Not Really A Waitress

It’s been years since I painted my fingernails with anything but a clear coat.

My toenails?  Pretty those babies up with reds and pinks and purples!

But my fingers?  No way.

There is nothing tackier than chipped fingernail polish, and even a manicure from the Ritz Carlton spa cannot make colored nail polish stay on my fingers.  The last time I had a manicure was on the way to the airport before a weekend trip.  By the time I reached the hotel in my destination city, my polish was chipped and peeling.

I vowed then and there to never paint my nails again.

Luckily, last spring I discovered how to fix my soft, peeling nails and make my natural manicure look beautiful.  What I didn’t realize at the time was that I held the key to my polish woes.

I apply Nail Tek II Nailcare to my fingernails almost every day.  Once a week I wipe down my nail beds with nail polish remover and start over.  It’s given me longer, stronger nails than I’ve ever had in my life.

Last week, I picked up a new bottle of Nail Tek II and happened to read the back of the packaging.

“APPLY DAILY as a top coat over polish.”

Could it be?

My lovely friend Becky, the same woman who turned me on to the Nail Tek II in the first place, insisted during her recent visit that we get pedicures and manicures.  I looked at the dark red polish, considered my 80s pop star Halloween costume, and remembered the instructions on the Nail Tek bottle.

I took the plunge.

Immediately after I got home from the salon, I put a coat of Nail Tek II on my fingernails over the fresh nail polish.  Shortly after, I took a shower, washed my hair, and checked my nails.  The nail polish had survived a shower – which was already an improvement.

Five days, five showers, three loads of dishes, one party, and roughly 30 hours of typing later, and my nail polish looks like this:

My nails aren’t quite as perfectly smooth and fresh looking as they were right after I left the salon, but I feel very comfortable walking around with them like this.

What I’ve done is add one coat of Nail Tek II every day before I get in the shower.  It only takes about 30 seconds for it dry completely and I can get on with the business of my morning routine.

While I appreciate the natural look of a clear coat manicure, I’m excited about the idea of being able to paint my nails with colored nail polish again.  I can have girl hands!  (I mean, kind of, if you ignore the fingers and stuff.)

That means giving myself pedicures and at-home facials.  It means going a little longer between hair cuts and letting my girlfriends wax my eyebrows for me.  And it also means buying drugstore brands whenever possible.

Several weeks ago, I ran out of the eyelid primer I use to make my eyeliner smudge proof.  Instead of replenishing it immediately, I began searching for a drugstore eye primer.

A few trips up and down the beauty aisles of Wal-Mart and Target proved to be fruitless.  I turned to Google, thinking perhaps there was an alternative similar to my Monistat Chafing Gel As Foundation Primer that I hadn’t heard of.

What I discovered online were several reviews for L’Oreal’s De-Crease Eye Shadow Base.  It was the only eye makeup primer I found mentioned that would be available at a local drug store.  Fortunately, I thought, all of the reviews were positive.  This stuff, it seemed, was exactly what I was looking for!  And it would only cost about $8!

Someone on a Yahoo! beauty forum owes me $8.

I’m not sure what, exactly, L’Oreal’s De-Crease Eye Shadow Base is supposed to do.  Maybe it gives you a smoother surface for applying eye shadow.  My shadows did go on slightly better with the base than they did on bare skin.

But the number one reason I use an eyelid primer is to extend the life of my eye makeup – and this eye shadow base did absolutely nothing for me in that department.  I should have suspected as much when the primer/eye liner mixture washed off the back of my hand with water and a quick swipe.

While L’Oreal’s De-Crease Eye Shadow Base is half the cost of Bare Escentuals bareVitamins Prime Time Eyelid Primer, the bareVitamins Primer actually works.  It makes my eye shadow colors more vibrant, it mixes with my liner powder to give me smudge free eyeliner, and it makes all of my eye makeup stay on all day.

You can’t buy Bare Escentuals at Wal-Mart, but you will get a free sample product when you buy it from Sephora.

Cover Girl Lashblast Mascara

Great Lash mascara can kiss my ass.

A few months ago, I wrote about how much I hate my mascara.  I’d been using Maybeline’s infamous Great Lash mascara for about 15 years, but I hated the way it smudged all over my face.

I decided it was time to find a better mascara.

What I was looking for:

“What I want is a mascara that makes my lashes longer, darker, and slightly thicker without clumping.  If it helps them curl – bonus.  But most importantly, I want it to stay exactly where I put it for an entire day.  I don’t want grey smudges under my eyes!”

The commenters on that post gave me tons of suggestions ranging from $6 tubes of Almay to $25 tubes of You Have Got To Be Kidding Me.

We take a break from this review for a word on spending money on mascara:

I am not afraid to shell out cash for good product.  I spend hundreds of dollars on great products for my curly hair.  I buy my foundation powder and eye shadow from Sephora.com, and pay a pretty penny for it.  But I refuse to spend more than I have to for mascara.  The reason?  Even premium mascara has to be replaced every 3 months.  It doesn’t matter if there is still mascara left in the tube, good eye health demands that you replace your mascara regularly.

We now return to our review.

Suburban Oblivion suggested Cover Girl’s LashBlast mascara.  So did Drew Barrymore.  I decided for less than $7, I’d give it a shot.

I absolutely love the staying power of this mascara.

What prompted me to finally remember to write this review after using LashBlast for 3 months was an extremely long afternoon nap.  I woke up and headed to the bathroom to freshen up before going grocery shopping, and found that my mascara was still perfectly in place.  Perfectly.  Not even a hint of a smudge.  After a nearly five hour nap.

What makes this so fantastic is that this is NOT waterproof mascara.

I decided to try out a non-waterproof version to see if I had better luck with clumping and in the interest of actually being able to wash ALL of the makeup off my face at night.  I was concerned that a non-waterproof formula wouldn’t be able to stand up to sweat and constant rubbing.

I can wash (and cry) this mascara off, but it survives regular (non crying) days beautifully.  And if you do happen to cry, it comes off in some crazy scientific way that doesn’t leave you with raccoon circles.  I’m not sure why or how this happens, but it’s kind of nice if you’re caught off guard by a sob fest.

LashBlast comes with a thick, plastic applicator unlike any I’ve ever used before.  It does an excellent job of coating my lashes completely without causing clumps or too many spots on my eyelids – especially on the under eye area which is a little harder to clean up if you make a mess.

On most days, I apply one coat of LashBlast in black for darker, thicker, longer, and slightly more curly lashes.  For the occasional evening out and a more dramatic look, I’ll apply a second coat.

I still plan to check out a few more drugstore brands, but I give Cover Girl’s LashBlast a glowing two thumbs up recommendation.

You can pick this mascara up at any drugstore – Wal-Mart, Walgreens, etc. etc. etc.  You can also buy CoverGirl LashBlast on Amazon or at Drugstore.com.

It makes me feel smart and better than you.  I mean, helpful.  It makes me feel helpful.

My point is – someone asked me a question.

Elizabeth asked:

“do you know of any good facial cleansers that control oily and dry spots? As in, both at the same time? My forehead is both. I have no idea how this is scientifically possible, but my old cleansers aren’t working anymore. Help!”

Allow me to pretend to be an expert in skin care.

My immediate answer is your skin is probably not actually both oily and dry.

Truly oily skin is very, very rare.  And while cosmetic companies have been talking about “combination” skin for pretty much EVER, that is also pretty rare.

And yet, you’re breaking out AND having parts of your skin flake off, right?

Been there.

In fact, I actually had black heads and zits once right not top of skin that was dry and flaking off.  I googled and googled and then finally broke down and scheduled an emergency facial.

And then I rolled around for a few minutes in the idea that I was someone that scheduled emergency facials.  I started imagining myself using terms like “the help” and “my Jimmy Choos” and “that lovely woman who does my toes.”

But back to my schizophrenic face.

As it turns out, what was actually going on was that my face was really, really, really dry.  The blackheads and zits and oiliness were a result of my skin trying to work overtime to make up for the fact that I was stripping away the moisture in my skin by trying to fight the zits.

At least, that’s what the very expensive esthetician told me.

I didn’t believe her, of course.  Because it doesn’t make sense that dry skin would have blackheads and oil slicks.  And also – maybe I made my skin more dry by trying to fight the acne, but I had to do that because the acne was there in the first place, right?

My very expensive esthetician told me to shut up and do what I was told.

1.  Wash your face with a very mild cleanser.

(OH!  Look!  Something that actually addresses your question!)

You need to clean your face, but resist the urge to use anything too harsh.  What you are focusing on right now is getting your skin back in balance.

I use All Sensitive Cleanser by Aveda.  Unfortunately, this stuff is not cheap.  At all.

I’ve heard people rave about Cetaphil, a drugstore brand you can pick up just about anywhere, but I hate it.  It was way too harsh for my skin.  (Although, come to find out I was using their “for oily skin” version and not the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, but at that point I was too spooked to try again.)

The cheapest thing that I have used and liked is Equate’s Daily Renewal Cleanser – which is basically Wal-Mart’s version of an Oil of Olay product.

But still, as long as I can spring for it, I stick with Aveda’s All Sensitive line.

2.  Moisturize.

OK, technically, my very expensive esthetician told me to use a toner after cleansing.  I did.  I have.  I also have not. I don’t see a major difference, to be honest.  Although toner sure feels nice and cool on your face, I have never seen a noticeable difference between using and not using.

That’s probably going to get me kicked out of some beauty experts club that I was never invited to join in the first place.

Again, I use All Sensitive Moisturizer by Aveda.  Or rather, I did, until I ran out.

And then I went to Wal-Mart and bought Equate Beauty Lotion.  I can’t find it on their website, because obviously Wal-Mart sucks ass.  But this is what it looks like:

You should know, I hate Wal-Mart.  With a passion.  But I absolutely love this stuff and I love how cheap it is.  It is, in my opinion, the perfect moisturizer.  It adds moisture to my face without being too heavy or sticky or icky or goopy.  I really, really, really love Aveda’s All Sensitive Moisturizer, but this Equate stuff is pretty damn close for 1/10th the price.

OK – so the daily drill is wash, (tone – or don’t), moisturizer.  Morning and night.

But then, once a week, you need to kick things up a notch.  This is especially important when your skin is totally out of whack and giving you dry spots and oily spots.

3.  Moisturizing mask.

Aveda Hydrating Masque

I promise you that adding moisture to your face in the form of a light mask (or masque if you’re fancy) will not make your face more oily or more zitty.

At least, I don’t think it will.

It never has for me.

Dear FTC: no one is paying me so please don’t fine me if I give advice that makes people have really bad adult acne.

Surprise, surprise, I use Aveda here as well.  The fact is, I have tried lots of other masks (or masques) and haven’t ever stumbled across anything else that I liked well enough to remember and/or recommend.

I highly recommend Aveda’s Intensive Hydrating Masque.  A $20 tube will last you a very, very long time, so this is one area where I don’t think you have to go searching for a cheaper alternative.

Now, you can add this mask to your nightly routine one night a week – OR, you can go full out and give yourself a weekly at-home facial.

Weekly At-Home Facial

1. Wash with regular cleanser.

2. Exfoliate. Again – nothing too harsh here.  I make a little paste concotion using brown sugar and olive oil.  (And maybe add a teeensy bit of sea salt and lime or lemon juice if you have it, but it’s really not necessary).  The exfoliation will help work out those blackheads – but don’t go crazy.  You have to be patient with your skin or it will rise up and revolt.

3.  Steam. Two ways to steam at home.  One, get yourself a big bowl of water, stick it in the microwave until it’s basically boiling, and then put your head over it with a towel draped over yourself and the bowl.  OR, you can fill your sink with hot water and dip a wash cloth in it and put the hot cloth on your face a few times.  I usally do the hot cloth trick.

4.  Mask according to directions.

5.  Moisturize.

6.  Resist the urge to do this every night until your skin clears up.

Once a week.  Seriously.  That’s it.  Wash, dry, moisturize twice a day and just WAIT.  You should see results within a few days.

If you don’t, I’m obviously full of shit.

Yes To Carrots

I went to BlogHer and came home with a bunch of free stuff I’d never heard of before.

Like the best shaving cream in the entire world.

And more lip gloss than I’ll ever use in my entire life.  Seriously.  Apparently there was a marketing pow wow somewhere and everyone decided the best way to reach women is through shiny, shiny lips.

I already had a favorite lip gloss long before I was introduced to the mountain of swag.  So color me less than excited to receive 382 new tubes and bottles and vials of lip stuff.

Until I accidentally for some reason tried the Yes To Carrots lip gloss one day when I couldn’t find my normal stuff.

Hello, love.

And also?  Gorgeous.

Yes To Carrots is apparently some kind of organic, non toxic lip gloss.  Honestly, I’m a smoker.  I’m not really agonizing over the chemicals I’m putting on my lips.  But, hey.  YAY FOR ORGANIC WHATEVER!  Right?

Right.

More importantly, this is one of those rare tubes of lip gloss that doesn’t make your lips sticky.  And every smoker knows that sticky lips are annoying. (God help me, if the people at Yes To Carrots ever stumble on this review they will have anuerisms en masse, I just know it.)

ANYway, my point is that I love this lip gloss.  It makes my lips soft and gives them just a tiny bit of color and shine without leaving me sticky.  And you know that thing that cheap lip gloss does where your lips actually feel more dry a few minutes after you’ve put it on?  This doesn’t do that.  At all.

But the very best part is that you can buy Yes To Carrots at Target.

I found it in an organic tote bag that someone had handed me at the BlogHer 09 conference.  I didn’t even know what it was when I saw it.

“Maybe it’s some kind of lotion,” I thought – because I don’t take the time to read labels well, apparently.  I tossed it into my suitcase with my 20 new tubes of free lip gloss and thought nothing of it until I got home.

I was unpacking my suitcase full of freebies and pulled out the blue bottle.

“Is that more lube?” my husband asked.  A fair question, since I’d already unpacked two different varieties from the swag bag.

“I don’t know what it is,” I said, and finally peered closer at the label.

“Evolution of Smooth.  Shaving cream.”  I set it in my shower and continued unpacking, completely unaware that I had just received the secret to sexiness and womanhood.

The next morning, I went to shave my legs in the shower.  I shook the tiny pink bottle of Skintimate shaving cream I’d been using.  Nothing.  I grabbed my husband’s shaving gel and shook again.  Empty.

Shit.

I noticed the big blue bottle with the funny pump head that I’d set on the floor of the shower the night before.  I pumped the topper, and a thick, white, lotion like substance oozed into my palm.

“What the hell?” I thought.  It was neither gel nor foam nor anything like what I expected in a shaving cream.

I slathered it on my legs.  It didn’t foam or make suds.  It didn’t create a thick layer on my skin.  Again, it reminded me more of lotion than shaving cream.

I raked my razor over my shin.  I remembered that I was going to change the blade.  “Screw it,” I thought.  “One last half ass job and I’ll replace it tomorrow.  No one is going to see me today, anyway.”

I quickly finished shaving my legs and underarms.  It went smoothly – more smoothly than I had anticipated considering the dull razor blade.  I rinsed off, washed the conditioner out of my hair, and stepped out the shower.

I noticed it when I was toweling off.

My legs were smooth.

Exceptionally smooth.

Smooth like I had just waxed my legs and rubbed myself down with baby oil smooth.

I raised my arm above my head and felt the skin in my arm pit with my fingers – because no one was watching me anyway.  And… my God.  Smoooooth.  Like, stupidly smooth considering arm pit skin smooth.

I reached back into the shower and picked up the big blue bottle.  I was suddenly grateful that I’d been given a full size sample.  The letters EOS jumped out at me.  Underneath, the acronym was explained in smaller letters.

That was it.  It was so simple.  Apparently, these people are just really into shaving cream.

I’ve been using the EOS shaving cream for about two weeks now.  I don’t have to shave near as often as I did before – although I have no freaking CLUE how that is possible.

This stuff is amazing.

I’ve used dozens of different kinds of shaving creams and never noticed one making a significant difference compared to another.  It’s just shaving cream, after all.

But this… this is better than just shaving cream.  This is fantastic.  This is silky smooth legs and arm pits in a bottle.  This is I want to touch my own damn legs awesomeness.

And, I can’t buy it anywhere near me.
