Last year at a family get together I learned of this fabulous and new possible way~ Hairbanglez. Founder and creator, Karin Zannella (who happens to be part of my family now and also shares a little bit of separation anxiety like myself if she didn’t’ have an elastic with her at all times), came up with this great design. The bangle features a groove where you put your hair elastic and Voila!!! No more wearing your elastic ON your wrist (and say good bye to the red marks too). The hair elastic is disguised on the bangle (if you use a black elastic) or you may use a color elastic to show a little bit of trendiness. I love that this hair bangle serves 2 purposes; it hides my hair elastic, but it also serves as a bangle after I use my elastic.

Right now, there are two bangles, Classic and Skinny, and both are in black. She is looking to expand the color selection soon, so make sure to check out her sight so you can expand your selection of bangles once you’ve received your black bangle. I have both and absolutely LOVE  them!!!

Fit Flops Walkstar 3

I work out regularly, but because I spend most of my working hours on a computer, I worry that I still don’t get as much of a workout as I should. And that is why I love my FitFlops so. I’ve had my Walkstars for years and absolutely adore them.

FitFlops are flip flops that give your legs a bit of a workout as you walk around doing your thing. They have a patented wobbleboard inside that forces your legs to work to maintain your balance. What’s amazing about it is that all you feel is a really comfortable shoe. Really comfortable. As in, I’d actually wear these for a day walking around a theme park. That comfortable. You can tone your legs as you go about your daily routine and never even know it.

I have flat feet and generally need to add arch support to my cute little thong sandals. I need to add nothing to the FitFlops. They are supportive, cushiony and comfortable. And they are durable. As I said, I’ve had the same pair of original FitFlops for years and they look as good as the day I bought them. A very good thing considering they are a lot more expensive than your average flip flop. They run $40-50 a pair on average, but I promise they are more than worth it. Once I started to hear the rumblings about Fashion Star though?  I was all in.  I can’t help it, I freaking love Jessica Simpson.  She has built her own empire and I love just about everything she does.  Way back when her Dessert line came out, I was the one purchasing things from it.  (OK so maybe I should have kept that one to myself.)  My Jessica Simpson heels?  My absolute favorite.  And while I don’t spend money on her clothes yet, I vow to when I get skinnier.

Nicole Richie?  I’ve always liked her sense of style as well.  A few weeks into the season and I don’t miss an episode.  In fact, I’m kicking myself for not writing about this week after week already.  I even have my husband roped in week after week… which speaks volumes.  (OK so maybe he’s just watching the models, who knows.)

I can not get enough.  I love that we are talking about fashion that actual people will wear.  More affordable than most things that come off the runway… something you can actually wear in your every day life.  Being able to purchase the winning designs the next day in stores?  See it today, wear it tomorrow.  Amazing!!!

My only actual complaint has to do with trying to get the actual clothing.  When you hit the NBC Fashion Star website, there is a connection to Macy’s at the top… but nothing for Saks or H&M.  Click the shop link and you end up being directed to all things NBC.  Think Community, The Office, etc.  Hitting up H&M was a bit disappointing… available in select stores or by clicking another link.  Feels like you have to hunt it down a bit.  Saks isn’t as hard to find, but yet again you have to go to their website.  It would be so much easier if everything was linked directly from NBC.

My personal favorite?  The white dress by Sarah…which is already sold out at H&M!

As an active mom of three boys, I have always looked for the perfect hairband to hold my hair out of my face while playing softball or going to the beach.  However, I also need it to be stylish enough to throw in my hair on a day when I didn’t have time to style it, but wanted it to look like I had.

The single bands are about 8 inches long with a lobster clasp and an adjustable chain.

Wicked Skatewear: Classically Derby.

When you make the decision to become a roller girl, things begin to happen. Things like suddenly wanting to have wheels under your feet all the time. Things like a growing sense of self esteem. Things like losing a crap ton of weight and suddenly needing skate clothes to practice in that won’t fall off you! Yeah sure you can go to one of the large mega sports stores to buy plain old shorts, t-shirts, and iron on some letters & your number on the back, or maybe… just maybe, you’ll go online and check out one of my favorite websites… Wicked Skatewear!

This Looks Familiar

Wicked is an apparel and uniform company that happens to sell roller skates and gear! Based in Huntington Beach, Strychnine and B-Train make your orders happen with the help of a few henchmen, oh, and a dog named Sh*t Pants. Yeah. I said Sh*t Pants. Their uniforms have been used on CSI:Miami and people from the Ellen Show and Oprah have been outfitted by Wicked for snippets on TV. Now, lest you think all they have is athletic gear, let me tell you Wicked Skatewear has awesome shirts, jewelry and socks that are wearable for everyday too.

My favorite Wicked t-shirt has a graphic of the flying skate done in a classical old tattoo style. It’s great. I’d wear it to parent pick up all the time.

Get A Close Up Of Roller Derby!

There’s a pair of kitty socks that I’d totally wear to run in (If only they had toes in them!). As it were, I know someone who ordered these from Wicked just this past winter and she said they kept her toasty during the cold weather. What more reason could you need to buy them?

They also have books about roller derby.  I love No Mercy because I dabble in photography, especially derby photography. Some of the shots in here are so amazing and damn near magical they practically leap off the page. Someday I’m gonna shoot snaps like that.

The company is run by the International Princess Project, which establishes micro-enterprise sewing centers in partnership with indigenous Indian organizations who help these women.  Each pair of Punjammies is sewn by a woman earning fair-trade wages and becoming a part of a viable business. Not only does this help them support themselves, it boosts their self-esteem and gives them a permanent way out, thereby helping to reduce re-trafficking. All the profits go back to the centers so they can keep on doing their good work. Most importantly, Punjammies helps get the word out about what is going on outside the US.

Here’s one the story of one of the company’s team members:

Struggling to stay alive and provide even the basics of necessity, Bhagya was looking for hope and opportunity. A man came to her village one day and befriended her, and she fell in love with him. He promised her a job in a nearby village. Filled with hope, she followed him to the village, where she knew no one else. A few days later, the man that she loved sold her to a brothel owner and disappeared. The job he had promised was a lie. Manipulated into working off the price paid for her, Bhagya was forced to service up to 20 clients a day with no hope of freedom.

When in the hospital after surgery on a tumor, Bhagya met a teacher with Harvest India, one of International Princess™ Project’s (IPP) partner organizations. After hearing her story, the teacher was moved and invited Bhagya to come to the Ashraya home, IPP’s second of three sewing centers. Through the efforts of IPP and Harvest India, Bhagya was released from the captivity of prostitution and offered a job sewing Punjammies™ in a safe, loving environment where she could heal from the nightmare she once lived. While I had hoped to see what might be trending for spring, this was the autumn/winter 2012 collection.  Over the summer I posted after each night, but this time around I live tweeted so I thought you all might just like to see a recap of what I liked best.  (Which by the way I saw about 14 runway shows over the week and its so hard to choose from everything!)

Jess Abernethy opened the week with Alpine Dream.  Lots of shearing on the sleeves, mixing of prints (think flowers on top and small dots on the bottom… things you would not think of putting together) and all flushed looking cheeks.  Get out the blush girls!

Maria Del Carmen Mercado showed how black is timeless and always in, especially when paired with lace.  This?  Was beautiful!

Sara Derfus had creative textured dresses like this

And used some great blue accents to make other bright colors really pop.

Karen Sabag showed us that feathers are not only in for your hair or earrings (which I have only just got on board with the feathered earring trend… the little 80′s child in me fought it for awhile)… but they can be applied to clothes to the waistline and even in some cases the neck.

This dress was GORGEOUS!

She also included some beautiful wedding dresses at the end of the show.  Getting married ladies?  I would definitely check out her designs if I was doing it all over again myself.  Or maybe a vow renewal.  Hmmm…

I was in love with Toni Lyn Spaziano‘s Chances R Designs line.  It felt very 60′s inspired… Pan Am sophisticated is how I would describe it.  Beautiful.

I was also fascinated by Karla Marie‘s Gorgeous Khaos line.  Think shiny, sparkles… lots of pale blue colors.  Bubble skirts with pockets!

Sarah Prost had some really cute skirts and dresses I could see myself wearing.  I loved her line last time too.  She makes gorgeous stuff!

And this time around she added a menswear line as well!

Lastly I would say all of Peach Carr‘s fashions are always in.  The former athlete in me is in love with her designs every time.  Chic tennis outfits that are made not only to dazzle on the court, but then head for a night out without needing to change anything but your sneakers… to high heels.  How cute is that!

I have to say it made the old field hockey player in me long to have had something that cool to play in, never mind hit the town in later on!

All in all amazing shows!  I am already looking forward to September when the next collections are shown.

Kitschy, Affordable Fashion At ModCloth

You may have seen ads for ModCloth on some of your favorite sites around the blogosphere, but you may never have checked them out. It’s time you did. ModCloth offers a selection of affordable, cute and totally kitschy clothing, accessories and home decor for the under 30 set (although they don’t card you at you checkout, which is good because they have some totally cute stuff that those of us a bit north of 30 can pull off). The style is retro and vintage; it reminds me of those old black and white TV shows from the 50s that my brother and I used to watch on weekday afternoons. Think “I Love Lucy,” but with a modern twist.

ModCloth was started by a husband and wife team, Susan and Eric Koger when they were only 17 years old (they were not married at 17 – just sayin’). It started as an outlet for Susan’s passion for vintage clothing and soon grew and grew. In a few years’ time, they had a real winner on their hands. I can see why. The reason I’m writing this at all is that I kept seeing their ads on other sites and always thought, “What a cute dress!” I finally clicked and found they were affordable as well.

One thing that sets this apart from other clothing sites is customer participation. The “Be The Buyer” feature allows customers to vote on sample pieces. Those that get the most votes go into production. Interesting concept and smart business, if you ask me.
