Friday Flop: Transformers 2

Posted on July 3, 2009 by in Friday Flops, Media

I’ll admit that I was hesitant to watch the first Transformers movie when it came out a couple years ago.

I’m not a huge fan of action movies and ginormous killer robots wouldn’t normally be my thing.

But I watched it – and I loved it.

In fact, I loved it so much that I was actually excited for the sequel to hit movie theaters last week.  Yes, I was happily anticipating going to watch a movie about giant talking robots.

And I was crushed upon viewing it to find that Transformers 2: Revenge of The Fallen sucked major ass.

The cheese factor in the second Transformers movie was beyond over the top.  It was cheesy to the point of being distracting and damn near insulting.

How cheesy is too cheesy for a movie about alien robots?

Two words:

Robot Heaven.

And I have nothing against heaven.  I, in fact, like the idea of heaven and all things related to that theme.  But robot heaven was a little much for even my overly sentimental heart.

Worse than the cheese factor was the desperate attempt to jam far too many “deep” plot lines down my throat.  Will he tell her he loves her?  Will the government realize their mistake?  Will he survive college?  Will he revive the dead robot?  Will he… wait… are we talking about his relationship with his dad now?  What the hell?!?!

I assume it was because they were trying to tell far too many stories, but the movie was at least an hour too long.

And the special effects?  MY GOD WITH THE OVERKILL.

We get it, you know how to do slow motion.  How about you chill for a minute so this movie will fucking END, already.  And is it really necessary to slow motion zoom in on a chic’s ass?  Really?

I’ve heard other people say they liked this movie and I was shocked.  All four of the people I saw this with were equally as disappointed as I was.

If you’re dying to know – wait for the DVD release and add it to your NetFlix que.

Spread the love - share this!

I did enjoy it, but I wish it wasn’t so long! I went to the midnight premiere and it just seemed to go on and on. It could have definitely been a hell of a lot better, but for what it was, I liked it for the most part.

@Ashleigh, I know I’m supposed to be all respectful of differing opinions and shit – but EVERY time someone says this to me I think “WHAT IN THE HELL?!?! DID WE WATCH THE SAME MOVIE!!”

      Heh.

Yeah, I read a review somewhere that mentioned a small robot humping a woman’s leg and decided to not ever, ever, ever see this movie because…really? Robots humping legs? Do robots have, um, urges like that?

Also, Shia LeWhatever is kinda squicking me out with all his, “My mom is hot” and check out my mangled finger stuff. And his hair.

      @Heather, yes, robot humping.

AND? A portrayal of “black” robots that was so damn racist it was embarrassing to watch. Besides the fact that ROBOTS DO NOT HAVE ETHNICITY!

Oh – and apparently robots smell now, too.

You know, I like my robots kind of cold and calculating and heavenless so that when they get blown up, you can say, “Well, fuck. There goes my robot. Better start saving up” with no sort of moral complications. (Don’t get me started on black robots…I just can’t even bear it.)

This just feeds into my whole idea of Hollywood needing to get a clue and some new screenwriters. And I will not dare to go see the G.I. Joe movie because if it’s all wrong, my childhood will become tainted. Bah. Fie. Etc.

I’m right there with you on the first Transformers film, Britt… hesitant but loved it. However, I’m feeling the same hesitation, if not actually worse, about the second. I have not seen it and based on reviews like this and sooooo many others, there’s no way in (robot) heaven or hell I’m going to see it. I don’t even know if I will be putting it in my Netflix queue to be honest.

  5. I thought the robot heaven was lame. I thought the “stereotypes” were ridiculously funny. It’s only a stereotype when people assume that the robots were black. Plenty of white people talk that way too. So what, the robots are ghetto?

I thought the movie could’ve been shorter and the humping thing skeeved me out.

But even if I hadn’t liked it I wouldn’t really care because I went into it not expecting much since I was only there because my son couldn’t take himself. Also, I haven’t even seen the first one.

No interest in seeing that movie whatsoever.
    Robot heaven? Seriously?! WTF?!!

  7. Thanks for saving me a Netflix rental, cuz that’s about as much play this movie was going to get. I didn’t love the first one–the effects were good, but the acting was horrible.

Will he revive the dead robot?

That “dead robot” was OPTIMUS Muthafuckin’ PRIME!!!

And had you read the 1985 Transformers comic book and The Matrix story-arc, you would have known that yes, it would resurrect the GREATEST AUTOBOT OF ALL TIME!!!
