Friday Flops: Ripped Jeans are Back?

Posted on June 19, 2009 by in Friday Flops

holy_jeansHer name was Lisa, and she was my nemesis.

We were in 6th grade and she was everything I wasn’t.  She was tall and tan and her blonde hair waved perfectly around her face, devoid of the kinks and frizz that my yet to be tamed curly hair possessed.

And she wore holey jeans.

My mother refused to buy me holey jeans.  My stepfather insisted that it was a waste of money to buy jeans that were already falling apart.  Lisa’s parents were obviously much cooler than my parents, as evidenced by the torn up jeans she strutted around school in.  She looked like she belonged backstage at a New Kids On The Block concert.

I longed for a perfectly ripped pair of holey jeans.

Now, it seems, I have another chance to wear holes in my pants.

Distressed jeans are all the rage once again.

Of course now I’m wondering if my parents had a point.

Am I really going to spend hundreds of dollars on a pair of pants with holes in them??

I don’t think so.

I adore Sarah Jessica Parker, but I think she looks like a slob in these jeans.  I’m damn near 30 years old, and I don’t think I’d look hip or edgy or trendy in ripped jeans anymore.  I much prefer the polished and slimming effect of a dark washed, mid rise pair of jeans.

Maybe I’m getting old.

What do you think of the distressed jeans trend?  Would you shell out the bucks for a pair of holey jeans?

I have a a pair of distressed jeans. I wear them all the time. Or when they are clean.

But I think it has to be the *right* kind of distressed jean.

Would I ever wear the ones pictured above? Hell no. They still have to flatter you, somewhat.

I LOVE my distressed jeans. However, i’m poor, and cheap. so I only buy them when they don’t cost more just for being distressed.

I don’t have to buy them. I have some like that. They BECAME that way — which is MUCH more authentic and cool. :)

I like distressed jeans, just not the boyfriend cut. I agree, too frumpy. I admit to spending 150 on distressed Seven jeans…to this day, it’s the reason I continue to try to lose weight. I WANT to fit my ass back into them. Sad, but true.

My mother also refused to buy me ripped jeans… so I just attacked mine with bleach and a razor blade :) (Of course, I got grounded for that)

Now… yeah, I own a few pairs of ripped jeans. And I bought them that way. But, I’m such a penny pincher (and jobless) so I’m not laying out big bucks for them. I grab mine off the clearance racks at Kohl’s and JC Penney instead. Can’t complain when they only cost $7-$10, right?

With a shoe with a heel and the right shirt, they don’t look frumpy at all, as long as they fit right. If they’re all baggy – then it does look pretty slob like. I definitely wouldn’t wear the ones in the pic above, though.

I like them. I think it’s the 80′s chick in me that will never die, but I also still own some holey jeans, so it’s not like I’m buying them new.

  7. I’m going to be the dissenter – I won’t buy distressed jeans. I could buy a cheap pair at Kohl’s and run over it with my Jeep myself if I wanted, but I think they look kind of sloppy. I like dark jeans best, but I just can’t make myself spend $100 on jeans. Shoes, no problem. Purses I can spend several hundred on. Jeans? $50 is my max.

  8. I have a favorite pair of very slightly distressed jeans that I love. But they don’t have holes in them. That’s tacky. But hey, if you want to be part of the fashion trend, all you have to do is dig into your closet and pull out your “painting jeans,” then rip them at the paint splatter. Cost: $0.

BTW, I just scored a wait-list ticket to BlogHer, so I will be stalking you (but in a non-stalkery way … just to say howdy).

  9. I won’t spend big bucks on any jeans (period) but I used to have quite a few pairs of jeans that made their way down to the distressed look. Of course, back when I was all angsty I bought everything from Salvation Army so it wasn’t that hard to get that full distressed effect.
