Friday Flops: I hate my mascara

by Miss Britt on June 26, 2009

Maybeline's Great Lash Mascara

Maybeline's Great Lash Mascara

I have a confession.

I hate Maybeline’s Great Lash mascara.

I know, I know.  It’s supposed to be the holy grail of mascaras.  Every makeup artist I’ve ever been to has had the familiar pink and green tube in their makeup bag.  My mother has used it for as long as I can remember and she loves it.

Hell, I use it.

And I hate it.

Specifically, I use the waterproof version because I have this incredibly sexy habit of sweating.  Constantly.  From my face.  I’m also the world’s biggest cry baby.  Waterproof mascara is a must for me.

And Maybeline’s Great Lash waterproof mascara does stand up fine against water…

And it does go on just fine.

It does give me dark, relatively long lashes.

But it also clumps really easy and smudges horribly throughout the day.  By noon I look like I’ve just returned from an all night kegger.

And the waterproof part?  Makes it really difficult to wash off.  Even with makeup remover it’s difficult to get my eyelashes completely gunk free.  It takes a good two days of no makeup before I’m starting with fresh eyes.

And yet, I still use it – because it’s as good or better than anything else I’ve found and it’s cheap.  Not that I wouldn’t be willing to pay a little more for great mascara – but I’m not paying a penny more for equal or lesser results.

What I want is a mascara that makes my lashes longer, darker, and slightly thicker without clumping.  If it helps them curl – bonus.  But most importantly, I want it to stay exactly where I put it for an entire day.  I don’t want grey smudges under my eyes!

Is that too much to ask?

Has anyone discovered a mascara that is better than Maybeline’s Great Lash?

Well, I love Estee Lauder mascara, but I get tired of paying almost $13 – for mascara! So I buy ALMAY one coat nourishing mascara; thickening waterproof. I love it. I think it’s around, $6? However, I tried the triple effect kind, and it was super clumpy, so avoid that one. (Or maybe I got a crap bottle.)

I love Diorshow, but you have to buy a new one every couple of months and it’s $25. I recently tried the Sephora brand because I was trying to economize and it’s ok, but it’s no Diorshow. The weird thing about both of them is that you have to use them for about a week before it gets to be the right consistency. The first week it’s really thin. Both are available at Sephora.

Covergirl Lash Blast is my favorite, or Max Factor 2000 Calorie, both come in a waterproof version :)

@Suburban Oblivion, AMEN to the MaxFactor 2000 Calorie Aqualash: it’s the only thing I’ll use. Not clumpy, no smudging or running, stays put in actual water (I used to be a swim instructor). Absolutely the perfect mascara, and less than $10.

I’ve tried EVERY kind. The only one that I have found that’s any good is Lancome!

I use Clinique Lash Doubling (green tube) and I have the same issues as you. It is expensive yes but I buy when they have the free gifts going on and there is always a travel size mascara in there, great for your purse!

I hate Great Lash, but none of my make up artist friends use it. They all use a MAC mascara of some sort, which I think suck more.
I hate Lash Blast too. Actually, I hate any mascara that has those new brush types. They just don’t work for me and remind me of a torture device.
Rimmel’s Extra Super Lash is my staple mascara. Lash Stiletto and Colossal Lash are my new loves, and Cover Girl makes a waterproof version of Fantastic Lash that I use for beach days and days at the pool.

Alright, I know it’s a weird one, but the givency “Phenom’eyes” is awesome. Yes, it’s totally expensive. And the applicator is crazy weird. But it’s great.

Glory hAllelujah! I hate that stuff too. Loreal. Voluminous waterproof rocks my eylashes. Love it. Typing on iPhone. Excuse the typos :-)

L’Oreal Lash Out waterproof – I used it for my wedding and I liked it more than any mascara I’ve ever used. I also like that it has an old-fashioned brush, not one of those weird rubbery ones that is so popular these days.

For the record, I’ve never liked any Maybelline product I’ve tried. Ever.

I tried Great Lash back in high school. Hated it then and never tied it again.

I used L’Oreal Voluminous and Lash Out –both waterproof versions–until they came out with Double Extend. I wear eye cream 24/7 and I still don’t get the smudges. I love love love it.

Plus you can get it relatively inexpensively at Kroger and Rite Aid Walgreens and *gasp* Wal-Mart

I think we had this conversation when we had lunch with Hilly- I tend to mix my mascaras, and still haven’t found the perfect blend.

I hate the Lash Stiletto- just makes things clumpy.

L’Oreal is OK – both lash out and voluminous.
This maybelline is just kind of meh to me.

I even had a blogger ship me some Shu Uemura from Europe to try because I read an article saying how great it was. Again: meh.

This has been one of my constant quests. Hoping I find the answer before I’m too old to appreciate it.

I use this stuff from Avon but I can’t remember the name of it. It makes my lashes thick long and sexy and doesn’t smudge all over when I cry (which is often) but does wash off easily with just regular old face wash.

I am mascara retarded so I have the kind that on the other end has this erasing stuff that takes it off when I manage to get it all over my eyelid.

Only complaint is that when you wash it off, it goes all over your eye so you look like a raccoon but then you just wipe it off with your towel and it goes away.

Try a tubing mascara. I use the cheap L’Oreal version and it’s amazing. You have to do one eye at a time so the white coat doesn’t have a chance to dry, otherwise it’ll clump.

It goes NOWHERE. Every other mascara ends up under my bottom eyelashes, making it look like I have dark circles even when I don’t :-/

I have used Cover Girl’s Volume Exact and really like it. It comes in waterproof, but I can’t vouch for that because I don’t use waterproof mascara.

I am currently using Exact EyeLights for blue eyes and like it a lot. It also comes in a waterproof version.

I really liked Bare Escentuals’ Brushless Mascara, but I hate paying $15 for something I have to pitch in a couple of months.

@Finn, Oh, the Exact EyeLights is also by Cover Girl.

I will throw in another vote for L’Oreal Lash Out Waterproof. It’s good enough for me, I’ve been using it for years. It doesn’t really thicken my lashes, but that doesn’t bother me at all. I want length and it does do that. It definitely stays put, too. For the price, it’s a keeper.

What ISN’T better than Great Lash? I tried it back in the day, hated it, tried it again recently after hearing HOW AWESOME IT was and hated it. I have three or four mascaras right now, depending on how dramatic I want it. Cover Girl’s LashBlast is an absolute must; I have the regular and waterproof version, although the WP formula isn’t that great. MAC’s Plushlash is pretty good and I hear their Dazzlelash mascara is awesome. I love Diorshow, although I just had a wee little sample of it.

Sephora has a Lashstash set I want to get because I’m still on the hunt for THE perfect mascara: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P239212&categoryId=C7010

Great lash is not so great for me either. My favorite drugstore and everyday mascara is Voluminous by L’Oreal (regular and waterproof). I try others all the time, because I’m a sucker for whatever is new, but I always go back to voluminous.

My favorite high end is Lancome Defincils.

I love BadGal Lash from Benefit and Stila MAJOR.

What I am using now is L’Oreal Double Extend and sometimes I use Cover Girl Lash Blast (even though I hate all other Cover Girl makeup).

I love my Cover Girl Lash Blast (regular and Luxe). I don’t use waterproof in any brand because it bothers my contacts.

Try the cover girl lash blast. If you don’t like it you just call them and they’ll refund you. But don’t worry – you’ll love. It is the best and I’ve tried everything from cheap to crazy expensive. It doesn’t irritate my contacts. It stays on until you was it off. The regular (non-waterproof) even stays on when I sweat and cry. the waterproof holds up to swimming and 90+ degree days but comes off with water based make-up remover in one go.

great last is great and never clumps for me, provided you never, ever et it dry between coats. then yer fucked. the blackest black is the best.

other cheap, drugstore brands that are great and also come in w/p are volume express, sky high curves, lash blast. my fave is still the ever expensive Dirshow mascara… badgal lash is pretty great as well.. Guerlain’s le 2 is also awesome but its crazy expensive. bah, i’m not obsessed with mascara at all.. really….

    Me too!
I bought Great Lash and I swear there is sone toxic chemical in it. My eyes were burning and I finally figured it out the day I DIDN’T use it and my eyes were fine.

I bought a tube of Neutrogena Healthy Volume on sale for $6.99 at Walgreen’s. It has a big brush with a tom of bristles that keep it from clumping. It hasn’t smudged once.

I’m so far behind, but I agree with Liz! I recently tried to branch out to a different mascara, and found myself giving it away! L’Oreal Double Extend all the way for me!

Loreal Double Extend is my pick, too. I don’t often use the white part, just the black, and it seems to be the best I’ve found at lasting through allergies, contacts, and general crying fits. It doesn’t thicken much, but it stays, and adds length and depth of color. Fairly easy to get off also, even without anything more than regular face wash, it comes off. Dunno how they manage that,,,to have it STAY where it is supposed to AND come off easily when you want it to…but….doncha just love it when something actually does what it’s supposed to!?!?!
