I used to do the personalized wedding gift thing, then I saw some REALLY BAD regifting situations. Now it’s cash or registry all the way.

When Steve & I get married, we will have lived together for probably 4 years, and both lived on our own before that. We’ve already decided that we’re only registering for 2 things: a 46″ flatscreen and a 32″ flatscreen. People can buy us gift cards for BestBuy and we will think of them every time we’re sitting as a family, watching SpongeBob in HD, or upstairs in our bedroom watching HD porn … or maybe not so much on that last part.

@Bethany, my husband and I had lived together for almost a year by the time we got married. We had a really hard time filling the registry with multiple things at various price points. I know I’ve gone to a few weddings where the only things left were the $200 vacuum cleaner or the $5 measuring spoons.

The biggest tip I know for buying wedding presents is: BUY GIFTS FROM THE REGISTRY.

It might sound impersonal, but pick something on the list that you would actually buy if you feel that way.

The couple has spent MONTHS/YEARS planning the rest of their life together – they have thought about what they want in their home! And they really would like that set of china or that KitchenAid mixer, please!

A couple of off-registry gifts are okay, but when EVERYONE starts giving gifts like that, I can promise that the newlyweds will be disappointed. (Though, yes, I’m sure they know it’s “the thought that counts” – but they really would like to furnish their home!)

I can also promise that unless you’re the very best friend (who should know that her BFF would like something from the registry), your personalized gift could be WAY off. Make it easy on yourself – use the registry.
