The MOTHER of All Holidays!

Hi there folks. Blondefabulous here. I just wanted to make you all aware of a VERY important holiday coming up… MOTHER’S DAY!!! Yes it is time to celebrate those nurturing, loving, cupcake baking, school project day before it’s due assemblers in our lives! Oh sure, you can go the traditional route, flowers, spas, & breakfast in bed. Those are all great! I, myself…. I long for something a little different. So here’s a short list of gifts for the irreverent Mom in your life!
Coffee. I love coffee. It makes me human enough to be able to deal with the monumental amount of stupid we have to see on a daily basis. School drop off car line, extreme couponers in the 10 items or less lane, fracktastical drivers on the roads…. it’s like a game that never ends! This shirt expresses why I drink my giant cup of love juice in the AM. Some days, I need a second cup to get to that +5 wisdom though. This great shirt is available from Snorg Tees for $19.95 and would bring a bit of humor to your mom, humor that will sustain her when she has one of “those” mornings!
Keeping with the caffeine theme, look at this beautiful necklace! This glittering bit of jewelry is from Think Geek and it is totally awesome! Made from sterling silver with a silver snake chain attached to it, this is one molecule I’d love to wear every day. From the Think Geek site… “Your favorite molecule shouldn’t be relegated to casual Fridays. Bring it with you every day with a sterling silver incarnation. Designed by a wayward Ph.D. post-grad in molecular biophysics, this sterling silver caffeine molecule pendant is about 1.5 inches wide. It hangs from a sterling silver snake chain that can be adjusted for length between 16 and 18 inches.” You can keep caffeine close to your favorite Mom’s heart for just $84.99!
Now, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge a huge group of moms out there that I know personally… the Roller Derby Moms! Hey, there are quite a few of us! Whether it’s skating our own bout, supporting our derby sisters as they skate theirs, or cheering on our little derby spawn at Junior bouts, the empowerment of the roller derby movement can be felt all over the world and now your own Mom can be a part of it when you give her this shirt! This t-shirt from Wicked Skatewear is a retro throwback to derby from the 40′s with it’s styling. At $23.99, this is a great gift for Mom. Also, Congrats to Strychnine, (One of Wicked’s co-owners) for becoming a Mom herself! That baby boy is gonna have a frickin’ AWESOME mom when he debuts!
Does your Mom like to wear makeup? I sure do! Ever since I discovered Sephora, I have expanded my makeup collection, but I also discovered I needed more brushes to apply said makeup! I found this set from Plasticland while browsing the site for shoes! (They have shoes to DIE for!) These six brushes are weighted, come with a velvet carrying case, and have antiqued silver handles shaped like Art Nouveau Goddesses! Talk about feeling like a goddess while putting on your make up! For $45.00 this is a gift mom can use all the time.
Does mom like flowers? I really like these flowers and I’m a Mom! These are Cherry Blossom knee socks from Fast Girl Skates, but you don’t have to be a skater to love them! Beautiful reddish pink cherry blossoms wind down the sock along brown branches making a lovely tribute to one of Spring’s most fragrant flowers! These flowers will be with Mom long after the FTD bouquet she got fades from time. $8.00 will get you one pair of these, but really, one isn’t going to make a bouquet. Make sure to get a dozen!
I love to play video games with the kids! We play Mario Bros, Bombermanland, Frogger, you name it. I would be pleased as punch to get this flower bouquet by Think Geek from my kids. 8 Bit throwback is very popular right now and when you think about it, this is the ultimate flower gift for your Mom. They never need watering, they won’t wilt with time and they will make Mom harken back to when she started playing games as a kid! It’s a total win! Also, at $14.99, it won’t break your (piggy) bank either.
And finally, we all know our Moms need a drink every now and again. No matter if it’s a Mai Tai or just a club soda, Mom is gonna love putting her feet up and sipping out of these Tiki Mugs! Made from ceramic and shaped like 4 different Tiki idols, these little gems will make for a relaxing cocktail for your Mom as she watches you try to clean the house she so meticulously keeps immaculate with almost no effort! Oh who am I KIDDING? It takes a Herculean effort! The set goes for $22.00 and don’t forget to get a pack of those cute little umbrellas for her drink too! (And is it just me, or does the green one look like the Idol Bobby found in Hawaii when the Brady’s went on vacay??)
So there you have it! A short list that thinks outside of the gift box! Now get out there and make your Mama proud!!!!
Friday Find: ModCloth

You may have seen ads for ModCloth on some of your favorite sites around the blogosphere, but you may never have checked them out. It’s time you did. ModCloth offers a selection of affordable, cute and totally kitschy clothing, accessories and home decor for the under 30 set (although they don’t card you at you checkout, which is good because they have some totally cute stuff that those of us a bit north of 30 can pull off). The style is retro and vintage; it reminds me of those old black and white TV shows from the 50s that my brother and I used to watch on weekday afternoons. Think “I Love Lucy,” but with a modern twist.
ModCloth was started by a husband and wife team, Susan and Eric Koger when they were only 17 years old (they were not married at 17 – just sayin’). It started as an outlet for Susan’s passion for vintage clothing and soon grew and grew. In a few years’ time, they had a real winner on their hands. I can see why. The reason I’m writing this at all is that I kept seeing their ads on other sites and always thought, “What a cute dress!” I finally clicked and found they were affordable as well.
One thing that sets this apart from other clothing sites is customer participation. The “Be The Buyer” feature allows customers to vote on sample pieces. Those that get the most votes go into production. Interesting concept and smart business, if you ask me. What better way in ensure that an item is popular than having customers pick their favorites before they’re even produced? They also feature stylist’s picks so you can see the next big things.
ModCloth is fun, affordable clothing and accessories for the fashion forward woman. Go check ‘em out.

Brand Specific: Hollywood Fashion Tape
We’ve covered fashion tape before. It’s a wardrobe essential, in my opinion (although maybe they could make clothes that actually fit the way they’re supposed to, but whatever). There’s nothing that looks worse to me than bra straps that are hanging out, and nothing more irritating to me than a piece of clothing that won’t stay put. I’ve tried many different kinds of tape, at many different price points, but I always come back to one: Hollywood Fashion Tape.
At $8.99 for a tin of 36 three-inch strips, it may not be the cheapest option out there, but I think it’s the only option. While other tapes will stick temporarily, the Hollywood tape will stick as long as you need it to. I have a linen jacket with floppy lapels that will use the same two pieces of tape for months. I take it off to wash and iron the jacket, then apply new strips and forget about them until the next washing. The other thing I love about them is the material they are made from; it’s stretchy and flexible. This is important for a couple of reasons: 1. It’s silent – other types I’ve tried crinkle when I move, like actual tape; 2. It holds better because it moves with you and the fabric.
The tape size is perfect for most uses: keeping bra straps hidden, closing gaps in button-down shirts, keeping lapels in place, etc. If you don’t need the whole three inches, you can cut it (do so before removing the backing). You can also find special packs of odd shapes at fabric stores—they will help you through almost any fashion dilemma. I see they also sell small dots that can be an excellent choice if you just need a bit of tape.
My only complaint? Every time I buy more tape, I get another tin. I don’t need another tin, and I hate throwing them in the trash. Ladies—come up with a refill pack and I’ll buy it.
P.S. – Check out some of Hollywood Fashion Secrets’ other stuff—there’s something for just about every need. So cool.

Friday Find: Style Outside The Box

I love design of all types: fashion, decor, even Web and print design, so when I heard* about Style Outside The Box, I had to go take a look. I am glad I did. Style Outside The Box is a Web site devoted to giving independent designers a place to showcase their quality goods. Think of it as Etsy with the iffy stuff filtered out.
From their Web site:
Style Outside the Box is the first shopping site where an elite style council juries and selects every product to meet Style Outside the Box’s standards, so customers never have to worry about the quality as well as the uniqueness of every product. We are a website solely for exclusive independent designers who stand behind every one-of-a-kind product made and sold.
They sell everything: home decor; clothing and accessories for women, men and babies/kids; jewelry and gifts. My favorites are the home decor items, many of which are made with sustainable, eco-friendly materials. Prices run the gamut, from a selection of gifts under $30, to some pricier jewelry and dresses, although the prices aren’t unreasonable considering that each piece is one-of-a-kind.
It’s a wonderful feeling to get something beautiful that no one else has… it’s especially wonderful when you can give your BFF a great gift that’s as unique and gorgeous as she is. In fact, I have my eye on a nice item for a special someone who has a birthday coming up. I’m not telling who because she reads this blog (at least she better).
Beyond the great merchandise and the wonderful venue for up-and-coming independent artists and designers, Style Outside The Box is a woman-powered business, just like Buy-Her. I love the idea of being able to support companies run by women, especially when they’ve got stuff I actually want.
Go there now and see what they’ve got—through the month of December 2011 they’re offering 10% off your purchase when you use code lovesotb.
*I feel compelled to mention that I learned about this site from my mother because her BFF’s daughter works for Style Outside The Box. While that’s what got me to the site, I recommend it because I love their offerings and wanted to share them.
Holidaze Shopping 2011

It’s gift-giving time again! I, and others like me, have been assailed in various media outlets by countdowns to Christmas, Hanukkah and other such holidays since early October. I already want to rip my hair out by it’s multi-colored, neon-hued roots! When it comes to gifts, as a roller girl, I don’t exactly look for your traditional cheese and meat baskets, lotions and soaps sets, or cutesy sweater ensembles. No, I look for the strange… the surreal… the “memorable.” Here’s a list of what I think will make folks always remember Holidaze 2011:
If you’re like me, you hate getting up early! Unfortunately most of us don’t have a choice since, you know, paying bills, making it on time to derby practice and getting kids to school take precedence over sleep. Still, abuse of the snooze button is increasing dramatically, so this little beauty will not only wake you up, but also help you get a jump start on morning exercise routine since you have to chase it down to turn it off once it rolls off your nightstand. At $39 from BustedTees, you just might be on time for your next morning meeting (or endurance practice).
How about this? This is a bookshelf that makes your books look like they are floating in mid-air. How cool is that? So when you have your friends over to watch the latest Blu-Ray disc, they can marvel at the fact that, not only do you still own real ink and paper books, but you’re magical enough to levitate them! This shelf mechanism from Plasticland.com is only $17, so you could order a few of them and get back into displaying your books.
I live in Florida, land of sunshine, beaches, and year-round shorts and sandal sales! Usually the weather is awesome, but last year we had one of our coldest winters ever. I was wishing I had had a pair of these leg warmers. Wicked Skatewear sells these babies for $13.99 and man, do they look toasty. Not just for roller girls, you could totally rock these on a chilly morning, with shorts or a mini skirt, or even as extra protection under a pair of sweatpants. I’d have totally worn these everywhere last winter because I don’t really own a whole lot of actual “pants.” I do, however, have lots of booty shorts; these leg warmers would go with those, too.
And while we’re on the subject of legs, look at this beauty. Yes I know Halloween is over, but you’re looking at a woman who has a zombie family on the back of her mini van instead of the cute stick figures! This lovely hand(foot?)bag has gashes dripping blood and a broken bone up top for a more realistic look, but also has a Velcro opening on the side for easy access to your wallet, mascara, and other assorted zombie-killing paraphernalia. This is also from Wicked Skatewear. Aren’t they the twisted little imps? Anywho, $14.95 will put this under your tree, in your stocking, or in your zombie emergency kit so you’ll look fabulous for the upcoming apocalypse.
And in a nod to a friend across the pond and friends up in NYC, I found this lovely shirt from BustedTees. In a perfect mash up of Queen Elizabeth and Star Wars, this shirt is just all sorts of awesomesauce! The silhouettes of R2-D2 and C-3PO above the “Keep Calm and Move Along” are both witty and charming and adds an air of whimsy to the whole thing. Holy crap! Did I just use the word ‘whimsy’? Who am I? So, should you folks feel the urge for a little whimsy in your life, $20 will help you acquire this awesomely awesome shirt.
Aaaaaaaaand on to the cute portion of our little list! “The Big Bang Theory” is one of my family’s favorite shows, and the exploits of Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, Howard, & Penny make us laugh every week whether it’s the nerds trying to fit in with the real world, or Penny trying to make heads or tails of the nerd world. One of the things we found most funny was the episode where Sheldon was sick and conned Penny into singing the “Soft Kitty” song to comfort him. Now we can all have our own Soft Kitty! This cutey plush kitty cat actually SINGS the Soft Kitty song! If I were under the weather, this would make me feel better in no time! Get it for your favorite TV fan for just $29.95.
OMG! I squeed really loud when I saw this bag over there to the right! It’s a cosmetics bag shaped to look like a taco, but really, I wouldn’t just use it as a bag for my makeup. I’d use it as a clutch for when I went to derby bouts, shopping, and, oh… ANYWHERE! Look at how cute it is? Coach it isn’t, but who needs another boring old purse? fredflare.com has this totally adorbz item for $18. Now, where do I find a burrito wallet?
OK, this one is kinda personal. For your tree trimming pleasure, or just for general decorating purposes, here’s a great gift for the roller derby enthusiast in your life! This two ornament set is great. It’s even Bradentucky Bomber colors. What more could you need? So give your tree a little attitude this year courtesy of Plasticland.
And lastly, look at this totally epic cat scratcher! It’s from SUCK UK and it is totally cool. Imagine you little fluffums mixing his own beats while taking care of those pesky long claws. OK, you feline friend won’t actually be ‘mixing beats,’ but he will be having a ball while exercising his muscles and clawing on something fun, rather than your heirloom furniture. I’m thinking of getting one of these for my cat, Fluffawufagus. At about $24 American (15 pounds), I think Fluffy would be pretty happy finding this under the tree rather than a dead mouse.
So there you have it, folks, my 2011 gift guide for those who are a little off-center. Nothing too pricey, everything all in good fun. Now go out there and save our economy!

Style Week Providence – Opening Night
Monday, August 29th was the opening night of Style Week Providence at the Providence Performing Arts Center (which was pushed from starting Sunday August 28th due to Hurricane Irene). Roughly half the state of Rhode Island is currently without power due to storm damage so it was a welcome distraction to get back in gear with Style Week. While I unfortunately had to miss Maria del Carmen Mercado‘s runway show, I was able to make it in time to attend the next three shows.
Not only was I lucky enough to just attend, I had front row stage seating. I could actually place my feet on the edge of the raised white runway. Such a difference from January’s Style Week where I could only attend the last night, standing room only in the back of the Providence Biltmore. It was amazing to be so close to the models, the lights, the cameras. It really made me look at each piece of clothing so differently. And this time around I could also focus in on the shoes and accessories as well!
We all know how much I love my shoes and accessories!
Denise Hajjar was my first show of the night. Her line is described on her website as a “classic modern look.” There were times I really felt like I was staring back into some 1970′s fashion but yet it didn’t seem really dated either. It had an edge to it making it look like something I would want to wear now. She had some really nice styles for the fall and I was in love with all of the brown tones, as well as some adorable dresses.
Kara Wickman‘s website describes her line as a “mix of ready-to-wear separates and old Hollywood glamorous gowns for the effortlessly chic,” she aimed to design a line to transform from day to evening with the change of an accessory’. While varied in colors, it was the teals that I found especially striking. I couldn’t help but also notice the jewelry paired with her styles was none other than Modern Shades of Gray. As a girl on always on the go myself I like being able to change up a look without having to do much. LOVE that this line transforms so easily!
Samuel Vartan‘s runway show was filled with what I would describe as classy beachy looks for men and women. Like that term? I made it up on the side of the runway. Going yachting? Perfect! Linen was featured in several styles. The Optix eye wear the models were sporting helped to complete the looks.
And…then there were some that looked like this. No words. Hold my hand. I don’t know what to tell you.
I do know what to tell you. All I could think in my head was Hey! Aladdin called and he wants his magic carpet back. Or something like that.
I digress.
So not all of this line was quite my taste. Humor aside I could still appreciate all the work and time that went into each piece and I found it super sweet when Samuel walked the runway at the end with his little boy.
Opening night of Style Week Providence? Huge success! My sister-in-law Ana and I had a wonderful time and she helped me take some of the photos I used in this post. Also… holy swag! We missed out on the first bag since we were late but ended up leaving with two more! Lots of goodies, including hair extensions from Indique, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter, a gift certificate from Optix eye wear and the list goes on. Have no fear, they will be covered in future Buy-Her posts ladies!
In the meantime this week, make sure you are following Buy-Her and me on Twitter for live tweets during the runway shows each night.
Till tomorrow, when I post again!
Celebrity Trend: White Lace
December 29, 2010 by Corrin Foster
Great news for those of us that couldn’t wear white on our wedding day with a clear conscience (don’t look around the room like that - I’m talking to you)! White lace is a serious celebrity trend that’s making it’s way into mainstream retailers for spring.
Kim Kardashian, Lauren Conrad, Taylor Swift and Nicole Richie have all been spotted wearing white lace this winter and I’ve found some great pieces that are budget friendly, on trend, and easy to wear.
White Lace Cardigans
Everybody loves a good cardigan (or 74 cardigans, as the case may be) and I think they are the easiest way to embrace the white lace trend. Throw one on with jeans and a t-shirt or over a little black dress and you’re ready to go. I adore the Gap lace back cardigan – what’s not to love for less than $60?
White Lace Dresses
For the full on celebrity effect, lace dresses require nothing more than a simple pair of shoes and minimal accessories to make a statement. I really love the American Apparel flower bud lace dress with it’s scoop back and linear pattern – just make sure to wear it as a layering piece or you’ll be showing everyone your business, as is the case with most American Apparel pieces.
White Lace Tees & Tanks
The lace tee originally struck me as very 80′s Madonna (a look I wasn’t willing to try) but now I think they are gorge. I am co-vet-ing the lace deep v-tee by Beyond Vintage. Even Target is getting in on the action with lots of lace tees and tanks in their juniors department!
Lace Accessories
If you’d just like to dip your toe in the white lace trend, play it safe with accessories. A lace scarf, headband, or clutch is a great way to sprinkle the trend into your wardrobe.
So, what do you think of white lace? Too white wedding? Remind you of your grandma? Okay in moderation?
Holiday Style Do’s and Don’ts
December 9, 2010 by Corrin Foster
Yes, the holidays are a time to dress a little flashier and spread some holiday cheer through your wardrobe choices, but it’s not the time to turn into a hot mess. Just think of all the holiday photos that will live on in infamy. The executives you have to woo at your company holiday party to secure that much deserved promotion. The younger sisters who stuff their pretty little faces with ham and pie without popping a button or smearing their lipgloss. What that? You don’t have a sister? Moving on…
Here are a few holiday style do’s and don’ts to keep you looking fashionable and festive.
Don’t – Holiday Jewelry
Only a select few people can wear kitschy holiday jewelry: those in elementary school, those on social security, and those that are criminally insane (no offense to the loons reading today).
Do – Holiday Gems
Think cocktail party not costume party when picking out your holiday accessories. Bold rings, chunky necklaces, and bright gemstones are all in the holiday spirit.
Don’t – Holiday Sweaters
I know it’s a joke, but the lady at the checkout counter when you’re making your holiday booze run doesn’t know that and neither will your grand kids when they are picking out photos for the cork board at your wake.
Do – Classic Knits
There are lots of options to avoid the Cosby-sweater-drunk-on-eggnog look this holiday season. A simple twin set that can be dressed up with gems, an embellished cardigan can be worn year-round, or if you must go for a something warm and cozy looking, try a classic cable knit (but dress it up with trouser pants and some great shoes).
(I own this cardigan in every color it’s so fabulous. Buy it. Now.)
Don’t – Hats worn by fictional characters
That means no Santa hats, no elf hats, and no light up Christmas trees on your head.
Call me a Grinch, but do you want a picture like this floating around of yourself? I rest my case.
Do – Stylish Hats
Want to pull off cold weather accessories that complement your holiday attire? Opt for sequin and gems and think of hats as jewelry. Snoods are the newest “it” accessory and I think the one below would look smashing as a necklace once you’re in from the cold.
Golden Rule of Holiday Style – Everything in Moderation
It’s best not to show up to any holiday event looking like a Rockette, even if your legs do look that good. Refrain from shopping for clothing in the seasonal department, listen to Aunt Coco and take off one accessory before you leave the house, and always remember that someone will have a camera this holiday season, and you will be well on your way to timeless holiday style.
10 Fabulous Gifts For A Fashionista
November 23, 2010 by Corrin Foster
Whether it’s a wife, girlfriend, mother, daughter, niece, or yourself (there’s nothing wrong with a little self-gifting!) most of us will be gifts for a fashionista this holiday season. Below are ten gifts (chosen by moi) that are sure to please any style-conscious friend or family member (and me).
10 Great Gift Ideas For A Fashionista
1. Magazine Subscriptions – Give the gift that keeps on giving – 12 months of fashion, style, and inspiration in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar, British Vogue, Lucky and other fashion & style magazines.
Bonus: Super affordable and no wrapping!
2. Nina Garcia’s Look Book $13.97 – Advice on what to wear for every occasion from the fashion director of Marie Claire and Project Runway judge, Nina Garcia. She’s smart, chic, and sharp tongued. Who wouldn’t take fashion advice from Nina?
3. Charm Bracelets - Charm bracelets are back in a big way. There are lots of fashionable variations (like this Juicy Couture braclet/necklace combo) and personalization shows that you put time and effort into your gift selection.
Bonus: Years of gift giving are in the bag! Mark memorable occasions with new charms!
4. Sephora by OPI $48 – Nail polish is an accessory just like a fabulous bracelet or necklace. The Sephora by OPI gift set includes 18 mini nail colors, from the lady-like to the daring, that compliment any outfit.
5. Gift cards – Fashionistas are one of the few people I recommend buying gift cards for. Style can be really personal, and you don’t want to buy the wrong size or color. If you ‘re going to give gift cards, make sure it’s for somewhere with a wide selection (like Sephora, Simon Malls, or a department store) and that the dollar amount covers the cost of whatever you had in mind for the person (say a new purse or pair of boots).
6. Echo ‘Driver Touch’ Gloves $35 – Gloves make a fantastic gift because you can buy a high-end name brand for a reasonable price (check TJ Maxx for brands like Coach and Michael Kors). I love the classic driving style and bold colors of these Echo wool gloves. So chic.
Bonus: Textured pads on the thumb and index finger allows you to use your iPhone and other touch devices!
7. TOMS shoes $54 – TOMS have a cult following, and these Glitter TOMS are so versatile and sparkly that anyone can see why.
Bonus: For every pair you purchase, TOMS gives a pair to a child in need!
8. Vintage Purse Camera Strap $30 – Photography and fashion seems to go hand-in-hand thanks to the boom in fashion blogging. What better way to make your camera fashionable than with a strap that looks like it’s straight from a vintage purse (namely one that rhymes with FoFo Fanel)!
9. Gem Headphones $29.50 – Not only are these Orbit Gem Hearphones from Delight.com slim and functional, they look gorgeous and demure.
10. Miniemergency Kit $11.95 – Every fashionista need to be prepared for the worst – unraveling hems, broken nails, runs in tights. The Miniemergency Kit from Kitson is adorable and contains all the necessities: hairspray, clear nail polish, nail polish remover, emery board, lip balm, earring backs, clear elastics, sewing kit, double-sided tape, stain remover, deodorant, pain reliever, tampon, breath freshener, dental floss, and bandages.
Campus Chic with Timex

Look in your closet. Do you have a comfy pair of jeans? A v-neck cardigan? How about a pair of ballet flats or canvas sneakers? Maybe a white blouse or striped tee? You should! If you don’t, we need to talk wardrobe basics, ASAP. If you do, you have everything you need to put together the perfect Campus Chic look (even if you’re…ahem…not collegiate age). Everything except for the Timex, that is.
The Timex Camper is a military inspired watch that completes this preppy look. Its bold face and nylon strap make this watch comfy and casual, and the range of colors (not to mention the $35 price tag) make it an effortless edition to any wardrobe.
I’ve been wearing the white Timex Camper watch all week, with everything from the classic collegiate look to a more trendy military style. It’s a nice feminine size, so it works well layered with bracelets and bangles and its low profile means it’s not too bulky to wear with long sleeves.
The Timex Camper is definitely a casual watch, so I wouldn’t pair it with skirts or suits, but with comfy favorites and lots of layers, it looks chic and stylish.
Still looking for ideas on how to get the collegiate look? This video offers another take on preppy style from Timex Fashion Trend Director, Amy Goodman (Though I don’t know anyone besides my grandma that has a navy blazer just laying around. Maybe I’m not as stylish as I think I am?).
The Timex Camper watch is a hot commodity this season, but several colors are available (and a men’s version) at www.Timex.com.
The lovely people at Timex sent me a Core Camper watch to review. And so I’m not late to any sales.
