Coffee. I love coffee. It makes me human enough to be able to deal with the monumental amount of stupid we have to see on a daily basis. School drop off car line, extreme couponers in the 10 items or less lane, fracktastical drivers on the roads…. it’s like a game that never ends! Kitschy, Affordable Fashion At ModCloth

You may have seen ads for ModCloth on some of your favorite sites around the blogosphere, but you may never have checked them out. It’s time you did. ModCloth offers a selection of affordable, cute and totally kitschy clothing, accessories and home decor for the under 30 set (although they don’t card you at you checkout, which is good because they have some totally cute stuff that those of us a bit north of 30 can pull off). The style is retro and vintage; it reminds me of those old black and white TV shows from the 50s that my brother and I used to watch on weekday afternoons. Think “I Love Lucy,” but with a modern twist.

ModCloth was started by a husband and wife team, Susan and Eric Koger when they were only 17 years old (they were not married at 17 – just sayin’). It started as an outlet for Susan’s passion for vintage clothing and soon grew and grew. In a few years’ time, they had a real winner on their hands. I can see why. The reason I’m writing this at all is that I kept seeing their ads on other sites and always thought, “What a cute dress!” I finally clicked and found they were affordable as well.

One thing that sets this apart from other clothing sites is customer participation. The “Be The Buyer” feature allows customers to vote on sample pieces. Those that get the most votes go into production. Interesting concept and smart business, if you ask me. What better way in ensure that an item is popular than having customers pick their favorites before they’re even produced? They also feature stylist’s picks so you can see the next big things.

Hollywood Fashion Tape: I Accept No Substitutes

We’ve covered fashion tape before. It’s a wardrobe essential, in my opinion (although maybe they could make clothes that actually fit the way they’re supposed to, but whatever). There’s nothing that looks worse to me than bra straps that are hanging out, and nothing more irritating to me than a piece of clothing that won’t stay put. I’ve tried many different kinds of tape, at many different price points, but I always come back to one: Hollywood Fashion Tape.

At $8.99 for a tin of 36 three-inch strips, it may not be the cheapest option out there, but I think it’s the only option. While other tapes will stick temporarily, the Hollywood tape will stick as long as you need it to. I have a linen jacket with floppy lapels that will use the same two pieces of tape for months. I take it off to wash and iron the jacket, then apply new strips and forget about them until the next washing. The other thing I love about them is the material they are made from; it’s stretchy and flexible. This is important for a couple of reasons: 1. It’s silent – other types I’ve tried crinkle when I move, like actual tape; 2. It holds better because it moves with you and the fabric.

The tape size is perfect for most uses: keeping bra straps hidden, closing gaps in button-down shirts, keeping lapels in place, etc. If you don’t need the whole three inches, you can cut it (do so before removing the backing). You can also find special packs of odd shapes at fabric stores—they will help you through almost any fashion dilemma. I see they also sell small dots that can be an excellent choice if you just need a bit of tape.

My only complaint? Every time I buy more tape, I get another tin. I don’t need another tin, and I hate throwing them in the trash. Ladies—come up with a refill pack and I’ll buy it.

I love design of all types: fashion, decor, even Web and print design, so when I heard* about Style Outside The Box, I had to go take a look. I am glad I did. Style Outside The Box is a Web site devoted to giving independent designers a place to showcase their quality goods. Think of it as Etsy with the iffy stuff filtered out.

My favorites are the home decor items, many of which are made with sustainable, eco-friendly materials. Prices run the gamut, from a selection of gifts under $30, to some pricier jewelry and dresses, although the prices aren’t unreasonable considering that each piece is one-of-a-kind.

It’s a wonderful feeling to get something beautiful that no one else has… it’s especially wonderful when you can give your BFF a great gift that’s as unique and gorgeous as she is. In fact, I have my eye on a nice item for a special someone who has a birthday coming up. I’m not telling who because she reads this blog (at least she better).

If you’re like me, you hate getting up early! Unfortunately most of us don’t have a choice since, you know, paying bills, making it on time to derby practice and getting kids to school take precedence over sleep. I live in Florida, land of sunshine, beaches, and year-round shorts and sandal sales! Usually the weather is awesome, but last year we had one of our coldest winters ever. I was wishing I had had a pair of these leg warmers. Wicked Skatewear sells these babies for $13.99 and man, do they look toasty. Not just for roller girls, you could totally rock these on a chilly morning, with shorts or a mini skirt, or even as extra protection under a pair of sweatpants. I’d have totally worn these everywhere last winter because I don’t really own a whole lot of actual “pants.” I do, however, have lots of booty shorts; these leg warmers would go with those, too.

Nevermind brains... LEGS!

And while we’re on the subject of legs, look at this beauty. Yes I know Halloween is over, but you’re looking at a woman who has a zombie family on the back of her mini van instead of the cute stick figures! This lovely hand(foot?)bag has gashes dripping blood and a broken bone up top for a more realistic look, but also has a Velcro opening on the side for easy access to your wallet, mascara, and other assorted zombie-killing paraphernalia.  This is also from Wicked Skatewear. Aren’t they the twisted little imps? Anywho, $14.95 will put this under your tree, in your stocking, or in your zombie emergency kit so you’ll look fabulous for the upcoming apocalypse.

And in a nod to a friend across the pond and friends up in NYC, I found this lovely shirt from BustedTees. In a perfect mash up of Queen Elizabeth and Star Wars, this shirt is just all sorts of awesomesauce! The silhouettes of R2-D2 and C-3PO above the “Keep Calm and Move Along” are both witty and charming and adds an air of whimsy to the whole thing. Holy crap! Did I just use the word ‘whimsy’? Who am I? So, should you folks feel the urge for a little whimsy in your life, $20 will help you acquire this awesomely awesome shirt.

Sheldon's Kitty!

Aaaaaaaaand on to the cute portion of our little list! “The Big Bang Theory” is one of my family’s favorite shows, and the exploits of Leonard, Sheldon, Raj, Howard, & Penny make us laugh every week whether it’s the nerds trying to fit in with the real world, or Penny trying to make heads or tails of the nerd world. One of the things we found most funny was the episode where Sheldon was sick and conned Penny into singing the “Soft Kitty” song to comfort him. Now we can all have our own Soft Kitty! This cutey plush kitty cat actually SINGS the Soft Kitty song! If I were under the weather, this would make me feel better in no time! Get it for your favorite TV fan for just $29.95.

OK, this one is kinda personal. For your tree trimming pleasure, or just for general decorating purposes, here’s a great gift for the roller derby enthusiast in your life! This two ornament set is great. It’s even Bradentucky Bomber colors. What more could you need? So give your tree a little attitude this year courtesy of Plasticland.

And lastly, look at this totally epic cat scratcher! It’s from SUCK UK and it is totally cool. Imagine you little fluffums mixing his own beats while taking care of those pesky long claws. OK, you feline friend won’t actually be ‘mixing beats,’ but he will be having a ball while exercising his muscles and clawing on something fun, rather than your heirloom furniture. I’m thinking of getting one of these for my cat, Fluffawufagus. At about $24 American (15 pounds), I think Fluffy would be pretty happy finding this under the tree rather than a dead mouse.

Not only was I lucky enough to just attend, I had front row stage seating.  I could actually place my feet on the edge of the raised white runway.  Such a difference from January’s Style Week where I could only attend the last night, standing room only in the back of the Providence Biltmore.  It was amazing to be so close to the models, the lights, the cameras.  It really made me look at each piece of clothing so differently.  And this time around I could also focus in on the shoes and accessories as well!

We all know how much I love my shoes and accessories!

Denise Hajjar was my first show of the night.  Her line is described on her website as a “classic modern look.”  There were times I really felt like I was staring back into some 1970′s fashion but yet it didn’t seem really dated either.  It had an edge to it making it look like something I would want to wear now.  She had some really nice styles for the fall and I was in love with all of the brown tones, as well as some adorable dresses.

Kara Wickman‘s website describes her line as a “mix of ready-to-wear separates and old Hollywood glamorous gowns for the effortlessly chic,” she aimed to design a line to transform from day to evening with the change of an accessory’.  While varied in colors, it was the teals that I found especially striking.  I couldn’t help but also notice the jewelry paired with her styles was none other than Modern Shades of Gray.  As a girl on always on the go myself I like being able to change up a look without having to do much.  LOVE that this line transforms so easily!

Samuel Vartan‘s runway show was filled with what I would describe as classy beachy looks for men and women.  Like that term?  I made it up on the side of the runway.  Going yachting?  Perfect! Linen was featured in several styles.  The Optix eye wear the models were sporting helped to complete the looks.

And…then there were some that looked like this.  No words.  Hold my hand.  I don’t know what to tell you.

I do know what to tell you.  All I could think in my head was Hey!  Aladdin called and he wants his magic carpet back.  Or something like that.

I digress.

So not all of this line was quite my taste.  Humor aside I could still appreciate all the work and time that went into each piece and I found it super sweet when Samuel walked the runway at the end with his little boy.

Opening night of Style Week Providence?  Huge success!  My sister-in-law Ana and I had a wonderful time and she helped me take some of the photos I used in this post.  Also… holy swag!  We missed out on the first bag since we were late but ended up leaving with two more!  Lots of goodies, including hair extensions from Indique, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter, a gift certificate from Optix eye wear and the list goes on.  Have no fear, they will be covered in future Buy-Her posts ladies!

Timex Camper Watch

The Timex Camper is a military inspired watch that completes this preppy look. Its bold face and nylon strap make this watch comfy and casual, and the range of colors (not to mention the $35 price tag) make it an effortless edition to any wardrobe.

I’ve been wearing the white Timex Camper watch all week, with everything from the classic collegiate look to a more trendy military style. It’s a nice feminine size, so it works well layered with bracelets and bangles and its low profile means it’s not too bulky to wear with long sleeves.

The Timex Camper is definitely a casual watch, so I wouldn’t pair it with skirts or suits, but with comfy favorites and lots of layers, it looks chic and stylish.
