The Best Lip Gloss is a Lip Balm
Posted on April 23, 2009 by Miss Britt in Beauty
With summer quickly approaching, it’s time to think about lip gloss.
You knew that, right?
OK – quick lesson. Lip balm or lip gloss is perfect for summer makeup looks because it’s light and mainly sheer with just a hint of shine. Full color lipstick is usually too heavy of a look for summer.
Lesson over.
If you’re like me – and most women – the bottom of your purse and cosmetic bags are littered with lip glosses you’ve tried and half used tubes of lip balm. And that’s OK.
A girl can never have too much lip gloss, after all. And because it won’t last all day, most women like to keep a tube of lip gloss close by at all times.
The problem with most lip glosses is that the stuff that makes it shiny can also make your lips sticky and dry. In fact, that’s why a lot of women go the lip balm (a fancy word for chapstick) route – because their lips need the moisturizing and they can’t stand the dry feeling of lip glosses and lipsticks.
I have found the perfect solution in the form of the world’s greatest (and my new favorite) lip balm.
Burts Bees Lip Shimmer Lip Balm
Burts Bees has been known for years for their high quality moisturizing products. Their beeswax lip balm in the little yellow tin has become a favorite among women and a staple in purses all over the world. Because it works. (Oh, and apparently it’s all natural and some crap. Blah blah blah – whatever works.)
ANYway – Burts Bees has created the product that represents the perfect marriage between lip gloss beauty and shine and lip balm healthy moisturizing.
Burts Bees Lip Shimmer Lip Balms feel like heaven on your lips. Like the rest of the Burts Bees line, it goes on smooth and soft with no signs of stickiness and no drying out five minutes later.
And now it’s also pretty.
The Lip Shimmers add just an itty bitty amount of color and shine to your lips – without the excessive stickiness of most lip glosses. The color is subtle, but enough to put some life in your face.
My two favorite shades are nutmeg and rhubarb. Nutmeg is a little warmer and rhubarb is a little more cool pink. Both of them are a very natural hue that makes you look like maybe you’ve just been kissed recently.
And the best part?
They’re cheap! I picked up mine for $4.99 at my local grocery store.

Ok, ok. My amazon list just keeps getting longer after visiting this site. You have got to stop it! Actually don’t, now I have gift ideas to give to the hubs
@Kelly, hey – $5. Splurge.
My favorite lip balm is the one I got for donating at the Goodwill during Christmas. No, no, it wasn’t USED silly. It’s perfectly emollient, keeps my lips moist for hours, has spf 15. And it was free! Colorado is so dry year-round that you need good lip balm stashed everywhere. I only wish I would have snagged more than one tube.
@lynn @ human, being, what kind?!?!
@Miss Britt, I don’t know, it’s some generic tube with no manufacturer on it. I wish I knew, so I could order a case of the stuff.
Burt’s Bees Lip Balm was my salvation. It’s excellent for keeping lips soft and supple in winter and summer. There’s a tube on my nightstand and in my purse.
I’m not a lipstick/lip gloss wearer–there’s something in the color that really bothers the back of my throat. I have been eyeing the Burt’s Bees though–I think I’ll take the plunge
I’ve been eyeing this too… I’ve even gone so far as to touch the tube. A purchase can’t be far off. I’m willing to bet you’ve pushed me over the edge!
that burt fucker knows what he is doing! my mom turned me on to him years ago. although, i have to admit, i am now fully addicted to co bigelow’s mentha lip balm stick (mint infused for fresh breath!) and to co bigelow’s no 1650 vitamin mentha brown betty mint tinted lip gloss (made with peppermint oil). LOVE.
which reminds me, i need to have someone go to the mall for me. that bath & body shop is incredible and carries the co bigeow stuff, but i hate malls.
@hello haha narf, you know they have a website, right?
@Miss Britt,
fuuuuuuuuuuck, i never thought of that. not even kidding. ya know, i am surprised my work even gives me a computer. i’d be happy with the rock and a chisel. like the damn flintstones.
regardless, thanks for the wake up call!
I love this stuff, but I haven’t tried the ones with shimmer color in them. I’ll definitely have to get that for days when I don’t want to wear lip stick but still want “a little something”.
Since I started working at Bath and Body Works I’ve gotten addicted to the CO Bigelow. The colorless Mentha line feels cool on your lips because of the Peppermint Oil (my favorite is Spearmint) and the Liplicious line has a bit of color. They are both shiny and NOT sticky.
They are usually $5.
Britt, did you know our store is on Route 434 in Altamonte in the WalMart plaza? You don’t have to fight the Mall traffic.
@Little Miss Sunshine State, I love CO Bigelow stuff! The hand lotion that was swiped from my desk at work was the Bigelow Lemon hand lotion.
I love Burts Bees lip balm. I think right now I have 3 or 4 different ones.
I will definitely be trying that out – I am a lip junk addict!
I love Burt’s Bees & CO Bigelow mentioned by others. Excellent choices.
I have that lip balm and absolutely positively LOVE it… it tingles when you put it on, and stays for a while. Awesome!
I’ve been meaning to try Burt’s, but since I usually keep stockpiles of Chapstick I just haven’t gotten there yet. I am a Chapstick ADDICT.
I’ve been using Made from Earth’s lip balm for about a decade now and I’ve always loved it. It tastes, smells, and feels great on my lips.
I’ve tried the other variations of their lip balm such as the blueberry, spearmint, and citrus. the citrus one is a bit too feminine for me. So I’ve come back to the original vanilla flavor and I’ll probably stick with it for awhile. The cooling instantly sooths my dry lips while the beeswax and oils leave my lips feeling soft and moisturized. If you haven’t tried it yet, you should. Bottom line: There’s a reason people swear by this stuff. Give it a shot.
A friend told me about Burt’s Bees last summer and I really like it too, can’t leave home without it!
