Cheap Products For Curly Hair (That Work)
Posted on November 11, 2010 by Miss Britt in Beauty, Featured
I have expressed my undying love for the Aveda Be Curly line both in word and in dollars spent. As in, lots of dollars spent.
I have converted many a Suave customer to the Aveda side with my desperate pleas to, “try it, just once, you’ll never go back!” In return, I have received many early morning phone calls full of squee and, “Thank you! Thank you! It worked! I love you!” I adore Aveda styling products for curly hair.
But, I am actively looking for ways to cut my spending and there’s no denying that those hair care products aren’t cheap. Double but, my hair is my favorite thing about my physical appearance and I do not want to stop loving it in an effort to save a buck. (OK, a lot of bucks. Still!) Triple but, while I am willing to spend a small fortune on my naturally curly hair, I know a lot of women who aren’t – or can’t – and I really want them to be able to love their natural hair as much as I do.
So, I’ve been experimenting. And oh, how I have been rewarded!
Marc Anthony Curl Defining Lotion has officially replaced Aveda’s Curl Enhancer in my morning routine.
What that means is that I still wash my hair (if it’s on a wash my hair day – which is only a couple times a week) with Aveda’s Be Curly Shampoo. I then apply a conditioner – either from Aveda’s Be Curly or a cheap spray-on-leave-in conditioner I picked up from the ethnic haircare section of Target. I use a pick to comb it out.
Then I apply the Curl Defining Lotion. I had been looking for a lotion or creme because the Curl Enhancer I love so much looks like lotion and it leaves my hair curlier but soft, not crunchy. The label on Marc Anthony Curl Defining Lotion promised soft, shiny frizz-free curls with no alcohol, so it sounded like a close match.
Before we talk results, let’s talk price. An 8.3 fl oz tube of Marc Anthony Curl Defining Lotion is available for about $8 at most retailers – which is less than half the cost of Aveda’s Curl Enhancer. Of course, that’s an $8 waste if it doesn’t work, right?
OK, granted, I need a haircut. But the curls are curly and soft and shiny. I am a happy, frugal girl.
That being said, I have not found a replacement for Aveda’s curl control, which I use as the finishing touch after blow drying my hair with a diffuser. The other finishing products I have tried so far are leaving my hair weighed down and dull.
To recap, my current styling routine is:
- Wash (or not)
- Condition (always)
- Marc Anthony Curl Defining Lotion
- Blow dry with diffuser
- Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Control
- Done! Gorgeous! Say CHEESE for the camera!
You can find Marc Anthony Curl Defining Lotion online at drugstore.com.

I wonder how that stuff would work on Annabeth’s hair? Her hair is *super* fine so it gets weighed down easily but if she doesn’t have some kind of product in it, it gets out of control.
@Sheila, almost everyone I know with curly hair has fine hair. But.. how old is Annabeth?
@Britt, Haha! I know, I know….she’ll only be three (Saturday!) but seriously, she’s got a lot of ‘fro action going on if I don’t put stuff in her hair and looks like she’s never seen a hairbrush. Right now I use this frizz ease serum from garnier and an alcohol free kids hair gel from Hair Cuttery.
totally trying this. i refuse to spend the money aveda charges so i’ve been stuck with kinda crunchy hair. but i’ll go eight bucks if you give such a glowing review.
even if i can’t stop giggling at the double but and triple but.
If I could find products that would make my semi-curly hair be more curly without being crunchy I’d give up straightening. Well. I’d straighten less. I still love that I can go 3 days without washing when I straighten. I’m going to try this and see what happens.
What does the Aveda Be Curly Curl Control do for you? Is it a hair spray?
@Lisa, Curl Control is like a pomade for people with curly hair. That’s the best way I know to describe it.
You? Are adorable. I use KMS Curl Up Shampoo & conditioner, and herbal essences “Twisted” mousse. I may have to try Marc Anthony/Aveda.
@Angella, I cannot use a mousse. It dries my hair out and gives me the crunchies big time.
I tried this stuff and love it. I have super-curly hair (think ringlets!) and it leaves my hair soft… and not crunchy.
As for mousse, one of the only mousses (mousses? mousse? misse?) that leaves my hair as soft (and definitely not crunchy) is Got2Be “Kinky” curling mousse. The stuff is lightweight and a miracle.
I think I like the Got2Be “Kinky” mousse and the Marc Anthony stuff about the same.
Mixed Chicks curly hair system is still doing right by me.
