Dry Shampoo Can Change Your Life
No, seriously it can.
I’ve been seeing the same hairdresser forever. And ever since my first appointment, he has tried to convince me that washing my hair every day is a bad idea. I argued that I have oily hair and there is no way I could go even one day without washing my hair. He countered with the fact that the reason my hair was oily was BECAUSE I washed it every day. This went on for about nine years.
Finally when I was pregnant and tired, I woke up one day and looked in the mirror and decided that my hair looked pretty darn good as it was, and since I was so tired, I would not wash it that day. Surprisingly, the world did not end.
Ladies, that day changed my life.
Ever since that day in 2006, I have been washing my hair no more than every other day. Sometimes I can even go two days in between washings. I do still tend to be a wee bit oily but I’m not willing to give up my day free from washing, drying and straightening my considerable amount of hair.
So I tried dry shampoos. My hairdresser sold me a pricy salon brand, which worked just fine, but was… well… pricy. And I use it far too fast. One $20 can of it just didn’t last me the seven weeks I go between hair appointments. One day I was in Target and I found TRESemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo. It works just as well as the pricy one, but at between $4 and $5 a can, I don’t have to skimp on it to make it last longer.
I don’t think I could live without this stuff. I spray it in at the roots of my hair, let it dry for a few seconds, and then comb it through. It works best for me if I use it before my hair gets oily. So I use it at night before I go to bed. Once my hair is already oily, nothing is going to undo that except a shampoo. This was also my experience with the expensive brand, so I don’t see this as a flaw in the TRESemme product.
The one negative thing I have to say is that it claims to restore volume, which I don’t find it does very well. It’s ok for me because I keep my hair smooth and sleek so I don’t mind.
If the idea of getting more mileage out of a shampoo appeals to you, I think you’ll find this dry shampoo to work for you at about a quarter of the price of the salon brand. Think of everything you can do with that extra thirty minutes you’ll get back every other day!

When my hair was longer I used a dry shampoo every other day, too. I had bangs, so it really helped them not be an oily, tragic mess. Now that I rock the pixie cut, I can’t get away with not washing it every day seeing as I wake up with ridiculous bedhead. Boo!
Has anyone with curly hair tried the dry shampoo route before?
TRESemme also makes a waterless foam shampoo for use on curly hair. I hear it works well too!
Wh00t! You just made me a happy girl. I assume, it’s available “wherever delightful curly hair products are sold.”
LOL…yes it is!
I literally just bought this stuff last night! I used it this morning and just thought it was OK. I’ll try using it tomorrow night though!!
I do not know how to ask this without sounding like a scumbag so here it goes…
I only wash my hair twice a week if I can get away with it and that’s only because it starts to smell a little funky from smoking and all that. (I have a crapton of hair and I don’t use product very often so it doesn’t really get greasy.) So, my question to you is….does it make your hair smell clean?
Sheila,
If your hair doesn’t get oily, I would go with another product just to refresh it. TRESemme makes one called Refreshing Mist, or you could get one from like Bath and Body Works. This stuff doesn’t smell bad, but if you don’t need it for oil control, there’s no need to spray the clay (which is what this is made of) in your hair.
And I don’t think you are a scumbag. God, if I could get away with only washing my hair twice a week, I would LOVE it. I have a friend who can do it, but my hair is just oily.
Oh awesome – I didn’t know they made that stuff! If it works, I’ll be able to only wash once a week and my life would be happier. Wooo!
