How To Manage Curly Hair: The Wet Look

Posted on April 28, 2009 by in Beauty

curly-hair-wet In the interest of full disclosure:

That is not my wet curly hair in that picture.

Nor are those my eyelashes.  Good Lord, I wish.

Ahem.  Anyway.  I do, however, have naturally curly hair that I adore.  I have learned how to manage curly hair using product and a diffuser with my blow dryer.

But I have a confession to make:

Sometimes I am far too lazy or busy to spend the extra five minutes necessary to blow dry my hair.

Unfortunately, I have short curly hair so making use of a cute pony tail when I’m in a hurry is out of the question.  Recently,  I’ve stumbled on some great new products that allow me to very quickly tame my curls and get predictable results that I’m willing to go out in public with.

How To Manage Curly Hair When You Don’t Have Time To Blow Dry:

1. Wash my hair.

I’m still relying on Aveda’s Be Curly shampoo and conditioner.

I’ve been using these products for almost four years now and I still swear by them.  They don’t dry out or strip my hair and they provide the extra moisture that naturally curly hair needs.

And?

It smells nice.

2. Aveda Be Curly Curl Enhancer

This product looks and feels like a conditioner.

It doesn’t add any kind of hold, but increases the natural texture of curly hair.  It also adds even more moisture to your hair.  Runn this through your curly hair when it’s wet.

3. Aveda Confixor Liquid Gel

This is a new product for me.

My hair stylist has been using this on me for the last month but I refused to betray my loyalty to the Sap Moss styling spray.  And then Aveda went and broke my heart and discontinued the Sap Moss.  I finally broke down and got the gel.

I love it.  It’s super light and it’s not at all sticky and it doesn’t leave my hair feeling crunchy.  It’s just exactly the right amount of hold for curly hair.

4. Aveda Brilliant Medium Hold Hair Spray

This is also a new product for me that the saleswoman at the Aveda store convinced me to try.  I normally use Aveda’s Pure Abundance hair spray, but it’s too much hold for wet curly hair.  The Pure Abundance leaves my hair heavy and crunchy if I put it on without blow drying.

The Brilliant medium hold is perfect.  It’s designed to add a little shine and has added proteins for thickness – which is what helps curly hair hold it’s shape and volume.

And that’s it.  My hair isn’t crunchy or flat and it only takes me about 90 seconds from start to finish.  I still recommend using the full curly hair routine when you have time – you’ll have more volume and shape.  But this does the trick when I’m in a rush and doesn’t make me look like I was in a rush.

Is your curly hair thick or thin? Mine is thin and sometimes the products rec’d for curly hair weigh it down so much, it strips the curl right out of it.

Currently using Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo & Conditioner, but it seems to have lost its oomph with my hair.

Or my hair has lost its oomph. Which will give me a horrible sad face if it’s true.

@Heidi, I have an interesting dilemma when it comes to this, actually.

I have lots and lots (thick) of fine (thin) hair.

The confixor and medium hold spray are extremely light products – which is why they work on my hair when I don’t blowdry.

        @Miss Britt,

Oooh, then this might be the solution for me. I have an average amount of hair, but it’s so bloody thin and fine.

Naturally, it’s Aveda, so I’ll probably have to sell a kidney to afford it, but I’ve found with the products of theirs I do use, it’s always worth it.

  2. i think it ate my comment. server taking too long my ass! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

i said something like i am glad you have curly hair because i love that you post information that i could use. not that i do follow your instructions, but dammit i could if i wanted to!

  3. Awesome. More products I need to buy now. Which aveda store do you go to?

Aveda anything is awesome. Their Shampure is incredible.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the luscious curly locks. But I have friends who do, and I can get them these as gifts!

I have long curly hair too – lots of hair but it is very fine. And I hate salon people who SAY they can cut curly hair. I have a good one now, as long as I can keep her from cutting too much off, but I was just about to the point of asking for pictures before I let them touch my hair. I color it also, and have been using Paul Mitchell – switching around between color care and thickening stuff. I’m going to give this Aveda stuff a try as I run out of things. I think I will start with the confixor and Medium Hold Hair Spray, though. I’ve been looking for something that is lighter than hair spray to help keep the curl, and get rid of the frizz. Thank you so much for the tips!!!!

  8. As crazy as this may sound, Herbal Essences’ Dangerously Straight mousse totally tames my crazy curls. The only problem is, it leaves my wet curls a little crunchy, but it’s better than most. Of course, I usually just straighten my hair anyway…

Lately I’ve discovered that if I use a rollerbrush, I can blow dry it straight without it frizzing on me. Then I fix the top with a small flat iron. Much better for my hair.

I do swear by the Garnier Sleek ‘N Shine system, though. I’ll have to give this Aveda a shot. Your curls always look gorgeous!

Okay, I think the Curl Enhancer is just too heavy for my hair. Or maybe I used too much? I tried again this morning, and blew dry, but it still feels “heavy”. I think I’ll take the Enhance back and get the Confixer. (Is that what it’s called?)

    • Miss BrittNo Gravatar says:

@Robina, the problem is that the curl enhancer isn’t a product with hold. It’s a curl enhancer. To control frizz you need something AFTER that product.

And also, it is possible that you’re using too much product. I have very thick hair and even when it was very, very long I only used about a dime to nickel sized amount of curl enhancer in my hair.

I have thick curly somewhat course hair, and usually unless I put gel or pomade in it, my hair will frizz out into a giant puff. The Shielo Antioxidant Leave In Protectant isn’t too heavy at all, neither does it get sticky or flaky after application. if your hair is wet and you put some into your hair and let it dry you can get the “wet look” that gels provide, if your hair is damp and you put it in you can get tameness of frizz that pomades give. if you put it on dry hair then you get the definition and “piece-iness” that waxes give.

Have you ever tried the Gwen’s Blends Good Hair Conditioner. It doubles as a cream for curly hair. I’m curious to know how it would work in your hair.
