Is Spray On Sunscreen Worth The Extra Cost?

Presumably, you already understand the importance of sunscreen.
Ideally, you use sunscreen all year round to protect (at the very least) your face from harsh UV rays which cause wrinkles and cancer and that horrible leathery look that is so prevalent in Florida.
Sunblock. You need it.
Now the question becomes – what kind of sunscreen?
I’ve never had a preference for sunscreen. I’m still a little surprised that I’ve recently developed a loyalty to sunblock. I’m also surprised that you’re still reading.
ANYway – sunblock. My basic requirements are that it has at least a 30 SPF and is waterproof. A few months ago I had a nasty run in with a non waterproof/sweatproof sunblock and I swear to God never again. Ouch.
What else could you ask for in a sunblock?
Spray on.
In February, my brother-in-law visited us in Florida and forgot to bring sunscreen. I have no idea why he didn’t just use one of the dozens of bottles we had in the house, but he insisted on stopping to pick up a bottle of his own on the way to the beach. As luck would have it, the only sunscreen for sale at a convenient store blocks away from the beach was a $10 bottle of Coppertone Sport Continuous Spray.
I’ll never use another sunscreen again. Especially on my kids.
It now takes me about 90 seconds to completely lather up my kids. I spray them down, rub in any white spots, and send them off on their merry way. I even use it on their faces by spraying the sunblock into my hands and then rubbing their faces and ears.
My attention span and patience is slightly better than my children’s, but I also prefer the spray-on sunscreen for myself. The main reason is because I no longer have to worry about those little bitty lines of blistering sunburn that I would inevitably have to endure from the spots I missed with lotions. And also? Did I mention easy? And fast?
The biggest downfall of this sunblock is the cost. It’s about $10 for one bottle and it doesn’t last near as long as a bottle of lotion. I almost never go for the more expensive product, but the ease of use in this case is a convenience I am – gasp - willing to pay for.
You can get the Coppertone Continuous Spray at Walgreens or Wal-Mart. You can also pick up a 3-pack at Amazon and save a little on the per-bottle cost.

It’s totally worth it! Hubby goes through sunscreen like mad because he works outside, but he loves this stuff. It goes on easier and doesn’t cause breakouts, which the lotions can cause.
I discovered this when I went down to Florida in April and it was like the skies opened up and angels started singing.
Love it.
Will never go back to goopy cream again.
Totally worth the extra money.
xo
It really is awesome. I just always try for the highest SPF I can get.
Britt,
I buy the store brand @ Target (kids-style, SPF 70) for about $6 per can. Or, you can get the Nutragena kind @ Costco for $14.99 (in Denver at least) for 2 bottles.
I use both the spray on kind and the lotion, but prefer the spray on kind for my daughter because it sits light on her skin. She HATES lotions.
Be sure that whatever you’re buying has titanium dioxide in it. Researchers @ the cancer center I work at did some studies that shows that titanium dioxide is the most effective sunblock against UVA and UVB.
Banana Boat makes a continuous spray that you don’t have to rub in. It is a GODSEND for lazy people (like me).
This is the stuff I use before bike rides. It goes on in an instant, I’m always sure I’ve not missed my neck. It covers my face well. And, best of all, my hands don’t get lotion-ey just just before I slip them into my gloves.
I use sunscreen when I can spray it on. Otherwise I’m too lazy.
Best stuff ever. Target’s store brand works and costs less. I buy multiples when they’re on sale.
BTW, for the ladies, try the spray-on that Neutrogena makes. It’s less sticky and smells way better.
Im a serious tennis player and slippery hands are a big frustrating nono. especially here in hot southern california, sunscreen is a requirement for the summertime. Before when i had lotion, i would never use it JUST because it would affect my performance and grip on my racket. when i finally got my hands on spray (the continuous kind) i never EVER EVER EVER wanted to go back again. this stuff rocks and keeps your hands nice and dry. and gosh, i can go on and on about all the bad stuff lotion does. its oily, the bottles break (like they did inside my tennis bag -__-) and the oil that comes out from the bottle after not using lotion for a couple of months. to sum up what i said, use spray. nothing else
