The Hair Chalking Trend
Confession time. I can’t help it, I just love telling you guy things. When it comes to my hair, I have always wanted it to be crazy colors. Green, purple, blue, pink… I wanted to try it all. Except I never did. By the time I didn’t have to listen to my parents anymore (yup, I was that girl…no rebel here), I always felt like I couldn’t for some reason. Either because of student teaching, or the current job I had would frown upon it. Yes there was always a reason. And now that I look back I’m like why did I never just do it! Sure I dyed my hair lots of colors but we are talking mostly shades of browns, reds and black.
I can not tell you how many times I get the urge to just do something crazy with my hair. Right now, it is money that stops me. Not at all cheap to go to the salon to get several different colors put in (and then keep it up). Time consuming too! Get ready because I have a super affordable and cute alternative!
Hair Chalking!
You heard me right. Chalk that goes in your hair.
I have been hearing about Hair Chalking for a few months now and I was dying to try it. Studio B in Cranston was from what I can tell the salon that brought the trend to Rhode Island where I live. Before they had it, I could not seem to find it anywhere at home locally. What blew me away is how affordable it is. $10. Just $10! At Studio B they will add it for free on top of other services, or you can make an appointment just to have your hair chalked for $10.
And it takes just minutes. The chalk is applied directly to your dry hair and in less than 10 minutes it was all done. In my hair we used the teal blue and a lighter green color since I have been dying my hair a brown/reddish color. Here is the super cute result.
Hair chalking gave me just the change that I wanted. And for $10 I can tell you I will be back more than once to have it done again. Perfect for date night too! Or you know, taking your child to an appointment which is what I did after this yesterday. It certainly got some attention, I will tell you that.
My only complaint is that it doesn’t last long at all. I was told if you don’t wash your hair you can keep it in an extra day. Woo hoo I thought, I will be beaching it with my cute streaks in the morning. I however am the girl that is constantly touching her hair. Which means that without even realizing it, each time I touched my hair the chalk was coming out little by little. By the time my husband got home from work just a few hours later there was not much chalk left. That was a little disappointing.
Next time I think I will just put my hair in a ponytail before I get it chalked. It will keep it off my face, I won’t be touching it and it should stay in longer. Seriously though, for $10? And it only takes a few minutes? You have to go get your hair chalked and let me know what you think!
Special thanks to Studio b!

You can buy the chalk at craft stores and do it yourself. Even cheaper.
The roller derby team had a photo shoot once and some of the girls had to come straight from their work to make it. They didn’t have time to do anything wild with their hair before the flash started flying, but I remembered watching a few YouTube videos about Hair Chalking and we chalked up their hair!! Best, cutest, fastest hair idea EVER!!! Love it! (even though my hair is actually colored with real purple & teal streaks in my blonde!)
That’s what I was wondering, Vicky. Thanks for saying that.
Are they brighter than in the picture? I know they’ll be more noticable in lighter hair, but they are a bit hard to see in that photo.
megan they did come out much bighter…i wish i could have gotten it to show up better in the photo. and yeah, definitely more noticable in lighter hair
I just can’t stop reading the piece about you and lnoikog at your pics in Flare! That issue is a keeper!! I have the Elle(i think) that you are on the cover of too. I would like to try modeling, I know I have the body for it, just don’t know if I could handle it, or how to get started.
Are the chalks specially-formulated for the hair or they’re just the ordinary ones? Maybe I can just do some DIY hair chalking
Hi, this looks like a lot of fun for my wee grand daughters. They would love to try this! thanks for the info.
i have heard that chalk really dries out the hair. did you do any extra conditioning or just didn’t last long enough to notice?
