My headache cure

aveda blue oilI get tension headaches.

A lot.

One could surmise that I have a lot of tension in my life, or possibly that I have horrible posture and my spine is all out of whack causing my neck and back to always be tight and messed up and hurting my head.

Whatever the reason, I get tension headaches – the kind that starts in your shoulders, go up through your neck, and end up right behind your eyebrows.

Obviously, I try to keep ibuprofen on hand.  But I’ve also discovered another more natural – and immediate – solution for my headaches, courtesy of my local Aveda salon.

(Seriously, those people know me by my first name.  They should send me Christmas and birthday presents.)

I love my Aveda Blue Oil.  They call it a “balancing concentrate”, because they are Aveda and airy fairy fancy.  It comes in a small bottle with a roll on dispenser top.  That’s the official name of the dispenser thingie, I’m sure.  Basically, you roll it on wherever you hurt.  I roll it on the back of my neck and on my temples when I get headaches.

Do you remember Icy Hot, or Bengay?  It’s kind of like that, with much less of an old man smell.  It is slightly mentholated, but not overwhelming.  It’s soothing, not stinky.

Aveda describes it as:

“Our stress-relieving blue oil helps dissolve tension and raise energy levels with the balancing aromas of refreshing peppermint and soothing blue camomile. When gently touched to skin, its special rollerball applicator releases the perfect amount of concentrate for on-the-spot, cooling acupressure therapy.”

Rollerball applicator.  Yeah.  That’s what I said.

Spread the love - share this!

  1. And where would one buy such an amazing product? I’m on day eleventy billion of this migraine that never ends.

I’m at my wits end and would eat raw chicken livers if someone told me it could help.

@Sheila (Charm School Reject), you can get it on their web site (click the Aveda Blue Oil link in the post), or a local Aveda salon. It’s a pain in the ass to get.

ALSO – I’m not sure what this would do for a migraine. :-(

I need to try this because the stuff I have for sore muscles smells like an old Chinese man. Maybe because I got it from an old Chinese man, but that’s beside the point. I’d much rather smell like airy fairy stuff!

I guess the placebo effect would be a better explanation for this. Nothing topical can “cure” headaches. Perhaps the smell might relax you into feeling better. Or even, the fact that you’re spending a ton on an overpriced product might sway you into wanting it to work…

      @Shelley, it’s $7.50. I don’t consider that ridiculously overpriced.

And, I was very clear to say here that I’m talking about tension headaches, for me. Relieving muscle tension and stress – which causes my headaches – can definitely help “cure” a headache.

Annnnd, I also said I use ibuprofen. :-) But this works to help me start feeling better ASAP before the meds can kick in.

@Shelley, actually, I had to jump in here because YES, something topical can indeed relieve a headache by causing either superficial vasoconstriction OR vasodilation (depending).

  4. love me some peppermint. wonder if i would be able to handle the chamomile, what with my overly sensitive sniffer and all.
regardless, great review if it makes me consider looking into such a product.

Origin’s Peace of Mind is awesome, too. :)

  6. I’d like to try that, but I doubt it would help me. :(

Dang. I should have tested this the last time I had a tension headache which was, oddly, the last time I was at work. Hmm…

I’m going to get some of this stuff.
