It’s Not Ice Cream, It’s Purely Decadent

My husband is an ice cream connoisseur. Before we started really watching what we ate, if you asked him he would tell you ice cream was a daily requirement. And not just any ice cream, it has to be good ice cream. In our quest to eat healthier and avoid frankenfoods with ingredients we can’t pronounce we came across Purely Decadent’s line of ice cream made from coconut milk. Made by the makers of So Delicious dairy free products, Purely Decadent has come up with a product that fits both those requirements.

Purely Decadent is dairy and lactose, gluten, cholesterol, and trans-fat free and is certified vegan. How can something free of everything that seems to make food tasty still be good? I don’t know, it’s like magic beans! Instead of artificial sweeteners, Purely Decadent is sweetened with agave syrup which really makes me happy.

So how does it really taste? Pretty darn good! We tried the Cherry Amaretto flavor and it had big chunks of cherries in it and a smooth, creamy texture. The appearance was a little different than regular full-fat ice cream, but it didn’t detract from the experience at all and my ice cream loving husband gave it the thumbs up.

Nutritionally, Purely Decadent is a much better deal than regular ice cream at 170 calories for a half-cup serving versus about 240 for a half-cup serving of ice cream. It also has about half the fat and less than half of the sodium of regular ice cream, while packing a whopping 6g of fiber that you normally wouldn’t get in an ice cream. I think this dessert is especially great for people living a gluten-free lifestyle because the pre-made dessert options for gluten intolerant folks are pretty limited.

The drawback is that it’s rather expensive. I paid $5.99 for a pint at Whole Foods, which is the only place in my town that I’ve seen it so far. (You can use their store locator to find a store near you.) That’s slightly more than a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. Still, it’s really tasty and a great alternative to standard ice cream especially if you are looking for dairy or gluten-free, so it will definitely be an occasional treat at my house.

Mitch LOVES ice cream, probably more than he loves me. We’re fortunate that our local grocery store chain has a large selection of ice creams that are gluten-free (and they have a convenient list!), but my sister-in-law does gluten-free, dairy-free so I have to suggest this to her.

I’d like to try it for a change of pace.
