Popchips Cured My Snacktime Blues

Popchips

Confession: I love me some chips. Crispy, crunchy, savory (is your mouth watering yet because mine totally is) chips are my huge food weakness, but this healthy lifestyle thing I’m doing is not very chip friendly. In fact, I might go so far as to call it a hostile chip environment because let’s face it, they’re loaded with fat and salt and crunchy cheesy salty yum goodness made out of artificial flavors and preservatives. Then I found Popchips.

Popchips have changed my chip loving life because they are a: crunchy and b: cheesy and c: made with air and not fat. It’s the best of all worlds.

I don’t pretend to know the kind of magic charms that work to make chips puff up all crispy and delicious from thin air, but the people at Popchips are clearly geniuses. They take potatoes and  apply heat and pressure and BOOM. Chips.

I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first, because I’ve had rice cakes and you practically have to chisel them off the roof of your mouth they’re so dry. Not so with the Popchips, which texturally are pretty close to a rice cake while being thin like a chip. I have no idea how they pulled that off but it’s awesome. They’re full of flavor and crunch, unlike baked chips which I find rather bland.

Popchips come in a variety of flavors, but my favorite is the cheddar. The sour cream and onion is a close second, but really? They’re all good.  And I can have 19 of them for 120 calories and 4g of fat, which I’ve gotta say is a total bargain.

Popchips are available in most grocery stores. Look for them in the “health food” section rather than where the rest of the devil chips live. They’re cool like that.

  1. Uhh…Popchips made my snacking worse because I love them so much. If I open a bag of salt and pepper, I don’t stop till I hit bottom.

I was thinking about these for my husband, who can’t eat fried food. But as it turns out, he may have Celiac as well and has to watch for gluten. These aren’t made with gluten, but are made on shared equipment. Oy.

I haven’t had a Popchip in a long time. I’m gonna have to try some more at your recommendation, for some reason the kind I tried (no memory of which) didn’t tickle my fancy. I <3 potatoes in almost any form, and now that I'm an old bitty I should eat the better for me kind. ;)

  5. Popchips rock our worlds. We love the Salt & Pepper.

Do these taste like Pringles at all? Because I really freakin’ hate Pringles but I really freakin’ LOVE potato chips.

@Sheila: No, there was no resemblance to Pringles at all for me. These taste a lot better to me than Pringles!
