Air Popcorn is The Devil. But…

My favorite snack food in life is popcorn.
Specifically, I love buttered popcorn.
More specifically, I like popcorn drenched in warm butter and coated with salt.
Air popped popcorn, as far as I’m concerned, is from the devil.
But oh, how I love my hot air popcorn popper.
I have a Presto Poplite Popper that I am not supposed to use because I am not supposed to eat carbs. But I make a carbohydrate exception on occasion for a ginormous bowl of popcorn. Because if you’re going to take health risks you should do it in moderation, and nothing says moderation like the word ginormous.
This is, in my opinion, the closest you can get to movie popcorn without being in a theater.
How does the poplite popper work?
You put 2 cups of unpopped popcorn – the kernel kind – into the top. (Do NOT under ANY circumstances put oil in the popper.) Plug in the popper and stick a bowl under the spout. Two minutes later, you have popcorn!
It’s so easy a child can do it. Literally. My kids make me popcorn all the time.
Now, the downside of a hot air popcorn popper is that it makes hot air popcorn that tastes, basically, like air. BUT! You now have the perfect fluffy canvas on which to make the perfect buttery, salty, heavenly popcorn.
Microwave some butter and pour it over the bowl, shake on some salt, and voila! You’ve got popcorn that is way, way better than anything that comes in a microwaveable bag.
You can buy a Presto 04820 PopLite Hot Air Corn Popper for less than $20 on Amazon. I just realized Christmas is (holy shit!) coming up soon – and my mother loves movie style popcorn even more than I do. Guess what she’s getting for Christmas this year?

Best review ever. I almost want to go buy one just so I can make it as unhealthy as possible and ruin the whole purpose of buying it!
Oooh, we actually have one of these, except we might have donated it when we moved out of our house. Mostly because we have a POPCORN CART. A small one that my in-laws had but replaced with a bigger popcorn cart. (My father-in-law and husband are both popcorn fanatics.) Fresh popcorn is awesome. Although I’m kind of a freak and love my popcorn slightly stale. I blame it on the movie theaters with their addictive, slightly stale buttery morsels of joy.
I have to get this. Seriously.
I love popcorn but I hate the bagged microwave crap. We make it on the stove, the old school way….tastes better and it’s A LOT cheaper.
My dad loves it too but doesn’t have the patience for stove popping so I guess I just found his Christmas present.
Question : how do you keep the popcorn from getting soggy if you pour butter directly on it? When I make it on the stove, I pop it in butter and it gets pretty evenly distributed without the sog factor.
@Sheila (Charm School Reject), I guess I could always get the fake butter in a spray can?
@Sheila (Charm School Reject), I sometimes use butter flavored cooking spray. But mostly, i just melt the butter and pour it slowly all over it after giving it a second to cool off (the popcorn i mean)
You got me all reminiscy with this one. I loved my hot air popcorn popper. I really don’t like microwave popcorn–the texture is all wrong. You’re right, in that air-popped corn tastes like nothing, but put some butter and salt on it, and YUM. Serious. I have to find one. I didn’t know they made them anymore!
I agree 100% about the microwave popcorn – just is not the same. We used to use it before findind much better alternatives, one of which you have just written about – the hot air popper. Though you are being a little naughty adding both butter AND salt
The nostalgic in me still loves the old way of making popcorn – on the stove – and when we make popcorn at home like this it always takes me back to childhood.
