B.T. McElrath's Salty Dog Chocolate Bar

Salty Dog - World's Greatest Candy Bar

I am in love with a candy bar.  It’s my dark secret.  My 70% dark chocolate secret.

Our affair started innocently enough. I’ve always liked salt and chocolate. I’ve never met a chocolate-covered pretzel that I don’t like. But then, I met Trader Joe’s Sea Salt Caramels that they only have at the holidays for reasons unknown to me.  This affirmed that I wanted saltier chocolate.

One day, I was walking through Whole Foods and I was getting ready to check out.  There it was.  B.T. McElrath’s Salty Dog Chocolate Bar.  70 percent dark chocolate. Sea Salt. Butter toffee chips.

Here’s the thing.  Even though I was salivating, this potential impulse purchase was $4.99.  I can get a Hershey Bar for a whole lot cheaper and I know I like those.  But the salt and the toffee.  Oh, screw it.  I bought it.

This chocolate is dark and smooth.  The toffee pieces are small and add crunch but not overwhelming flavor.  The dominating flavors are chocolate and salt.  Fortunately, the chocolate is rich and it wasn’t something that I was ready to finish in one sitting.

This has now become my favorite treat when I go to Whole Foods.  I still feel like it is crazy to spend $5 on a candy bar, but it is such a good candy bar that I cannot resist it.

You can purchase the Salty Dog online for $4.95 and, definitely, at the Whole Foods in Las Vegas.

Eating in its proper context is not the problem. God gave us food for nourishment, strength and even for celebration. But when pleasure becomes unrestrained, then there is a problem.
