5 Fashion Trends for 2011
Posted on January 19, 2011 by Corrin Foster in Featured, Style
With my fashion resolutions in mind, I’m excited for what trends 2011 will bring to my wardrobe. From minis to maxis and brights to neutrals, I think this year will be quite the opposite of 2010. Here are my top 5 fashion trends for 2011 (because I’m way more qualified than say…Vogue or InStyle).
Long Sleeved Mini Dresses
Hemlines above the knee and neutral shoes will make you look like you have legs for miles. I’m a little more reserved (and no longer 19 years old) so I like to think of mini dresses more like tunics and layer them with tights or leggings and tall boots for the same effect. This is also the perfect opportunity to go bold with patterns and embellishments.

Wide Leg Jeans
Leggings and jeggings have been all the rage this year, and I think they’ll continue to rein supreme, but I’m looking forward to the comeback of wide leg jeans. They really give any woman a long and lean silhouette and everyone looks good in a classic pair of trouser pants.

Neutrals & Neons
You have to have cahones to wear fluorescent hues, but pair them with neutrals, and they are much more manageable and you won’t feel like a walking electric sign. My favorite combo is camel and neon pink, which I’ve already seen making it’s way into J. Crew’s spring windows.

Maxi Skirts
We’re all familiar with maxi-dresses – they look good on practically everyone, travel great, and are super versatile. The maxi skirt is like the forgotten stepchild with a grudge. It rears it’s ugly head every few seasons and makes most of us look short and stumpy. (Can you tell I’m not a fan?) If you feel like going all Big Love this season, keep it simple with a colorful solid tank or classic white button-up or give it some spunk with bias cuts or extra volume.

Duster Earrings
We’re not talking big hoops. We’re not talking statement pieces. We’re talking to the shoulder, drama-lama-ding-dong, works of art, earrings. Pull your hair back to let these babies dangle in all their glory and stay far far away from small children and pets.

Neutrals and neons, I love, and wide leg pants, too! Bring on spring! Oh and those mini dresses with long sleeves. Yes!
@Loukia, I have a feeling we could be dangerous shopping together.
I feel in love with Maxi skirts last year. Summer in Florida is so much better with a tank top and a floaty skirt. Shorts are nice but then I feel like I need to use tanner on my legs. The skirts are good for the lazy!
@Megan, I totally agree. I’d opt for a skirt any day of the week over shorts.
I love the maxi dress, but cannot get on board with the maxi skirt for some reason. I always look frumpy in them.
@Miss Britt, they cut me off right in the middle, which isn’t particularly flattering, but a girl can dream.
Hmm. My thoughts:
Mini-anything on me: No.
Wide leg pants: Okay.
Neons: Makes me think of the 80′s; I’ll probably avoid.
Maxi skirts: I’m too short for anything maxi.
Duster earrings: Mmm, yes please.
@FireMom, maxi dresses are great on all heights as long as you go for monochromatic. Try it! They are too comfy to miss out on.
@Corrin Foster, I disagree. Totally. I bought two separate monochromatic maxi dresses last summer. One green. One purple. Two different designers, so it wasn’t the brand/make of one brand. They were TOO LONG. They touched the ground. I walked on them. I tripped on them. I hated them. I repeat: I am tooooo short for maxi anything.
@FireMom, I’m a big proponent of tailoring clothes to fit. Especially something as height-specific as skirts and dresses. Besides the length, were the dresses working for you?
Yay for big earrings!!
I’m going to just say no to maxi skirts. At barely 5’3″ they make me look like the mayor of Munchkin City!
@Lisa, I’m 5’8″ and it would be a miracle if I could pull off a maxi-skirt. You really do have to be a beanpole.
