Affordable Fashion Trend: Statement Necklaces
Posted on June 22, 2009 by Miss Britt in Style
I hate trends that require a total wardrobe overhaul.
As a rule, I tend to avoid any fashion trend that means throwing out the contents of my closet and starting from scratch.
One of my favorite trends right now is the rush towards “statement necklaces”.
What the hell is a statement necklace?
Simply, and redundantly, put – it’s a necklace that makes a statement. In other words, it’s a large necklace that says “Hey! Look at me! I’m the focus of this outfit!”
But we’re not talking hanging expensive jewels around your neck. No, what makes this trend so great – and accessible – is how affordable it is to follow. Think costume jewelry.
Statement jewelry makes your existing wardrobe more versatile. You can take neutral pieces and add color with a necklace – or change the entire feel of an outfit just by swapping out your jewelry.
You can find unique costume jewelry – including great necklaces – anywhere from flea markets to department stores. I’ve actually found that plus sized women’s clothing stores tend to be the best places to find really great stand out necklaces, though I have no idea why. (I suspect it’s because they’ve figured out before the rest of us that drawing attention towards a great neckline is an easy way to detract attention from other parts of our bodies.)
Follow me over the jump for a few examples of statement necklaces that are perfectly in line with today’s top fashion trends…

Adorable much? And added bonus, I never feel too fat to fit into my necklace?
@MonsteRawr, I actually bought my favorite two “statement necklaces” at Lane Bryant and The Avenue. So there’s something.
I had no idea there was a name for that.
So pretty! I love the first beaded necklace. It would go with anything.
Ugh. I WANT to wear such beautiful things but I’m scared of colorful jewelry. I know. I need to get over it. By the time I do, the trend will be on to something else.
I’m always behind the times!
@FireMom, find a cheap one to try it out with.
@Miss Britt, I now have a dress (for family pictures) that is rather plain and v-necked. I came back to this post to hunt for good links.
I love the way that playful jewelry can change the look of a whole outfit without being costly.
You know I have a weird fetish for costume jewelry!!!
My best friend sells jewelry – she’s gotten me addicted to these “statement” necklaces, which I have never heard of them called that but then again, I tend to live under a rock when it comes to trends.
Wow, my newly formed jewelry fetish has a more palatable name!
I own that top left necklace.
I’ve also been sporting a lot of bracelets lately.
I am loving that necklace in pinks and orange!
Best place for necklaces like that is The Body Shop clothing store (bodyc.com). Their pieces run $6 each and it’s always buy 2 get one free. Most of the clothing is too young for me, but they are my one-stop for chunky jewelry.
Shells in blue and green are awesome. The idea behind statement necklace is quite amazing and one can give different looks to same wardrobe by just changing the costume jewelry in the neck, saving money from purchasing the new dress. Really innovative trend !!!
Each of These costume jewelry is shiny.
