Summer 2009 Trend: 27 (Maxi) Dresses

Purple Maxi Dress

I am a late convert to the maxi dress trend. Maxi dresses were all the rage last summer and spring, but I always assumed that the super long length would be too much for my petite frame.

This year maxi dresses are back and I have fully embraced maxi dresses for the summer. I encourage – no, I implore you – to do the same.

What is a maxi dress?

It has nothing to do with feminine hygiene and everything to do with wearable style.

A maxi dress is basically a really long dress. But we’re not talking floor length formal gowns. A maxi dress is a very casual look that can replace your shorts and t-shirts. You can dress it up or keep it super casual, depending on your accessories (because shoes and jewelry can change an entire outfit), and it becomes appropriate for just about any everyday occasion.

The best thing about a maxi dress is that it flatters a multitude of figures. It is perfect for hiding flaws from the boobs on down. Maxi dresses are also one of the most comfortable trends to come out since someone decide yoga pants were a fashion statement.

They are as comfortable to run around in as sweats without, you know, being sweats.

You can get maxi dresses in any color, solids or prints, in absolutely every size. The biggest thing to watch is the length. Ideally, a maxi dress should hit at your ankle bone.

You can find maxi dresses at every price point.  Find a few of my favorites after the jump.

Ooooh I was waiting for this to be posted. Yay!!!! These ARE 100 times more comfortable, and you can wear them for anything! (well, you know. Any everyday thing)

  2. StacyNo Gravatar says:

Okay, I totally want to try one of these, but I MUST wear a bra. They don’t seem to be made for bra wearers…

@Stacy, I have one of these, and I’m a girl that MUST wear a bra, too. I went and got a tank w/ a super hearty actual bra inside it, and just wear that underneath the dress. Looks totally cute, and the girls are supported.

@Stacy, look at dresses 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. All of those can be worn with a regular bra.

      I also love Adena’s idea!

I HAVE to wear a bra and tried all….. Where do you find one that you can wear with one of these??

    Aaaahh…
These dresses remind me of my days following the Dead.
    Totally comfy.

  5. So cute! I wish I had the arms for these dresses. They look so comfy!

I am all about the Maxi Dress. I actually found a couple of really cute ones at Steinmart for under $30. I wear them all the time. LOVE THEM.

  7. RobinaNo Gravatar says:

I like some of these, I’m just not sure I’m a long dress wearer person. I would have to think about it, try one on, and stuff like that. Besides, with my luck, it would get caught between my feet and I would fall.

  8. steenNo Gravatar says:

I’m, like, two centimeters away from actually buying one. I see them EVERYWHERE and they’re so cute and I almost bought an adorable hot pink one except TJ Maxx’s line sucked and I was already cranky.

  9. I’ve tried a few on, but since my legs are my best feature and my arms are my worst, I don’t love them on me. I WANT to love them though.

  10. JamieNo Gravatar says:

i LOVE these dresses…with me being 3 million years pregnant (not really, it just feels like it with twins and all) they are soooo comfy and PERFECT to fit over the belly when it’s HOT…i buy “regular” dresses and that way once the babies come (july 31st at the latest!) i’ll be able to wear them still and know they aren’t “maternity” dresses!

  11. IzzyMomNo Gravatar says:

I can guarantee you that if I got one that fit everywhere else, it would be too big in boob part. I need a padded maxi (as opposed to maxi pad) If that wasn’t so totally pathetic, it would actually be funny…

  12. aww…how nice! they are really lovable. i think this type of dress is something that will goes well with every woman, just choose the right design and size and its good! they are all really beautiful. like them all!
