Sexy Summer Sandals – Help me choose!

Posted on April 8, 2009 by in Shoes

I have a confession to make.

My summer shoe collection is woefully understocked.  In fact, I own more flip flops than I do strappy sandals.

*hangs head in shame*

I don’t know how it happened.  I believe in the power of high heels.  During the winter time I live in stilettos and pumps and well heeled boots.  I am the world’s loudest advocate for real shoes and shoes that make your legs look great.  And the summer is when you can actually see the benefits of a great shoe with bare legs the most!

And yet, I have one pair of meh black sandals with a meh heel, a pair of canary yellow slides and a pair of turquoise slides.  And these:

Splash Stiletto Sandals

Splash Stiletto Sandals

Clearly, it’s time to go shoe shopping for some great sexy sandals for summer.

As usual, I’m heading to Amazon first.  I have a gift card balance there that I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with.

The problem I always have when shopping for sandals is that I want something that’s going to be fairly versatile.  And I have fat feet, so the teeny tiny straps that are on some of the cutest sandals either look awful (picture foot fat squeezing through) or painfully uncomfortable (again – foot fat being squeezed by tiny leather straps).

Steve Madden Cork Bottom Wedge Sandals ~ Raspberry

These are adorable and available in my size for about $16. But I wonder how versatile a pair of raspberry wedges would be. Then again, I wear my yellow stilettos way more often than you’d expect…

AK Anne Klein Women’s Eddie Platform Sandal

These Anne Klein’s are about $30 and available in taupe in my size. But I wonder if they’re a little too dressy for regular wear. Although I am thinking that a neutral shoe like this could be very sexy with a red pedicure…

Nine West Women’s Haydara Gladiator Sandal

I do need a new pair of white sandals…. Oh. Fabulous. They don’t come in my size.

Jessica Simpson Women’s Delanco Sandal

Hm. I’m not normally a fan of Jessica Simpson’s lines. Everything tends to be a little to stripperesque for my taste. But I like these. And orange would actually get a lot of use with my wardrobe. I think orange is a great accent color for browns and fall color palettes.

Lauren Ralph Lauren Women’s Nazira Platform Sandal

I LOVE these in this color. These are PERFECT. Oh. These aren’t available in this color in my size. And they don’t have the same casual vibe in black. DAMMIT! (If you wear a size 9, please buy these and tell me how fabulous you look in them.)

Steve Madden Women’s Charoos Sandal

I don’t have any wedges. I’m scared to try them. I have big chunky legs and big chunky ankles and I’m terrified that a wedge – as cute as they might be – will just chunkify me even further. But these are so, so cute. And it seems like they’d be fairly versatile. Do I dare??

I hopped over to Zappos, but the sandals there are a little beyond my sandal budget.  I don’t wear the same pair of shoes day after day after day, so I need to be able to get more bang for my buck.

What do you think?

I’m leaning towards the black Steve Madden’s and the orange Jessica Simpson’s.

What’s your vote?

Wedge sandals are this season hot thing– go for the wedge

  3. VicNo Gravatar says:

I love those Ralph Lauren sandals, but as with most of them, they’re too high for me – I have really weak ankles and can’t cope with wearing anything that high. Damn!

  4. EVERY shoe is sexier with a red polish on the toes. “i’m not really a waitress” by opi is the best color ever invented for toes.

which shoe to buy? the most comfortable one!

    • Miss BrittNo Gravatar says:

@hello haha narf, I tried to find that when I went with Faiqa. I got something close I think, instead.

I can’t tell which one is the most comfortable by LOOKING at them!!

      • @Miss Britt, I was curious how buying shoes online goes for you. I’ve never done that for that very reason. How will I know if it’s comfortable or actually fits? What if my little pinky toe hits the strap in just the wrong place after it arrives?

        • Miss BrittNo Gravatar says:

@Melanie (Modern Mami), I try not to take a lot of chances. I stick with styles that I know work for me, things like that.

And worse case scenario, I return them. Amazon has a really great return program. I just don’t have time a lot of times to go to the store.

  5. FaiqaNo Gravatar says:

    Ann Klein.

On another note, just looking at those shoes made my feet hurt and my ankles swell.

    Sigh.

    • Miss BrittNo Gravatar says:

@Faiqa, would I have to tan to make them work? lol

      • FaiqaNo Gravatar says:

@Miss Britt, Hahaha… I had no idea you were so sensitive. :) Hmm, in retrospect, I guess me telling you to get a tan would have been like you telling me I need to get whiter… maybe not the most tactful advice I’ve ever given.

        • Miss BrittNo Gravatar says:

@Faiqa, sensitive? Are you kidding? I thought it was hysterical!!

          ANNNNND -

I’ve been using a bronzer on my face (it’s a self tanner for faces really) and you were SO RIGHT! I LOVE IT!!!!!

  6. Steve Madden! Can you buy me a pair while you’re at it? 6 or 6 1/2 ;) We can be chunkified together.

    • Miss BrittNo Gravatar says:

@Melanie (Modern Mami), WHICH steve madden?? Oh, you think I should get both? Why yes, yes Melanie, so do I!

      You wear a 6 – 6 1/2. Wow. Itty bitty feet.

  7. kapgarNo Gravatar says:

You live in Florida. So you actually have seasonal shoes? Wouldn’t you just wear sandals year round like Adam wears shorts even in December? Why bother with seasonal?

  8. LaurinNo Gravatar says:

I vote strawberry wedge – it’s the hottest thing right. I agree with you that certain colors, like red, really do go with everything and that is a versatile pink color. I wear my red sandals with everything. Plus, the way that wedge is narrow and also dips in at the back would be very slimming for your feet. Fer sure.

  9. These are not meh (http://budurl.com/rwjj) I think you might like them. See what you think. I’m with you. Especially this year, for some reason I have a sandal “thing.” Good luck on your quest :-)

  10. HillyNo Gravatar says:

I usually do not like stilettos at all, mostly because being a heavy woman, it takes a toll to try to stand on that little tiny spike. I just don’t have the body that works with them.

However, Steve Madden is my hero. All of the summer shoes that I own that are not flip flops are by Steve. He somehow manages to mix “semi-clunky” and dainty each and every season and I love him for it. In fact, I’m thinking about getting these now, thanks.

For you though? Orange all the way. You are one of the only people I know that can rock them.

  11. RobinaNo Gravatar says:

I love the Anne Klien shoes. And I don’t have “fat” feet, but I do have “wide” feet so it’s hard for me to find a show I like that don’t squeeze me.

  12. Mel FrancisNo Gravatar says:

My eye went directly to both pairs of Steve Madden…but then, I have a bit of a thing for him, so I might not be the most unbiased opinion…

  13. Britt's MomNo Gravatar says:

Damn those orange ones are cute cute cute. Could we pretend that they didn’t have Jessica Simpson’s name on them?

Are there any that have a heel but not a 12 inch heel?

  14. FinnNo Gravatar says:

I’m swooning over the Ralph Laurens…

Go for the Maddens. Wedges are just the thing to wear with that maxi dress. You DO have the maxi dress, right?

*sigh* Me either. But I’m working on it!

  15. StephanieNo Gravatar says:

Okay, you KNEW you’d lure me here with SHOES!

I love the Jessica Simpson orange sandals. Weird, I usually don’t like her line, either.

And as for the Steve Madden, I usually LOVE that line, and I really don’t care for those. Have you tried shoeocean.com? Or maybe shoefest.com? (they are a bit pricier, though)

Now, if money were no object, I would DAILY shop at stevemadden.com, it’s like an orgy of hot shoes over there. Seriously. I need a cold shower after browsing. I fill a shopping cart just for sexual tension.

Sorry, I had to share this:

    http://www.stevemadden.com/item.aspx?id=47967

Lovelovelovelove those. And I don’t think wedges make chunky legs/calves look clunkier…I think tiny strappy thin-heeled sandals are the culprit there. I think they thickness of the wedge balances out our frames. (Says the girl with cankles that go for DAYS) Just like with dress pants/trousers, gals like me with big hips need pants that fall straight from the hip, with a wider leg, rather than pencil-legged jeans that grip and narrow as they go down to the ankle.

Okay. Sorry about that, I was possessed by the spirits of Clinton and Stacey from WNTW.

  17. StephanieNo Gravatar says:

Did Hilly & I just link to the same SHOE???

  18. Sybil LawNo Gravatar says:

    The orange ones. Definitely.

  19. KayNo Gravatar says:

Yes on the Jessica Simpsons – they’re cute as hell. As long as you’ll get use out of the orange, go for it.
No to the black Steve Maddens. Wedges aren’t nearly as bad for “chunky” legs/feet as you’d think… but those? I think they would be. I can’t picture those looking right unless you have ankles the circumference of a pencil. And the leather looks hard, which, in my experience, doesn’t work well with fat feet like mine :)
Definite no on the Anne Kleins. They remind me of my grandmother’s shoes, but with a skinny heel.

  20. Shoes…now that is something I know. I love those orange jessica simpson shoes, but I have short legs and find that style, that kind of goes all the way up and covers your whole foot, makes my legs look shorter. Wedge’s rock though. Get both Steve Madden pair (pairs?) Also, T-straps wedges make short legs look awesome. In my humble opinion.

  21. Ms BatmanNo Gravatar says:

I have a pair of Jessica Simpson “stripperesque” black peep toe pumps (5″ heels) and I absolutely love them. Even with the heels that tall they are surprisingly comfortable. But not for every single day wear. I say go for it. I spent 3 figures on mine (yes, I know… ridiculous) but I think they are worth every. single. penny.

  22. I thought you’d look good in the Jessica orange ones.

I have small ankles just below large legs. My best luck finding slides or wedges has been Aerosoles.
