6 TV Series to Watch on DVD
Posted on May 21, 2009 by Miss Britt in Media
I’ve recently developed an obsession with watching TV series on DVD.
I love that there are no commercials, which means I can watch a 30 minute show in about 20 minutes or an hour long episode in about 45 minutes. Never mind what that says about how much programming we’re actually getting on TV these days. And I love that I don’t have to wait an entire week to see what happens next.
But mostly I love that this gives me a chance to fall in love with TV series I might have missed (probably because my DVR was already jam packed) when they first aired. Because what I need more than anything in life is another TV obsession. Clearly.
TV Series Worth Watching on DVD
| Sex and The City | |

![]() The Complete First Season |
This was the very first TV series I watched all together on DVD. I holed up in my room and watched TV until 4 in the morning because I just couldn’t get enough Carrie and Big. I don’t know how I missed the craziness when Sex and the City was first running – I probably didn’t have HBO – but it’s never too late to fall in love.
| Gilmore Girls | |
|
|
The Gilmore Girls is another show I remember hearing people rave about and thinking “hm, I should have watched that”. And then the show was canceled and it was too late to catch it on TV. Now the entire series is available on DVD, either in one massive collection or a season at a time. I am loving the banter and enjoying adding creative new insults to my vocabulary.
| Friends | |

My husband made me swear that if we named our daughter Emma, I would never tell anyone that I was a rabid fan of the show Friends – because naming your baby after a baby on a sitcom is just weird. But, I cannot deny my love for Friends. Ross & Rachel, Rachel & Joey, Monica & Chandler, Phoebe & Joey who should have gotten together… I loved every minute of this series and can watch it over and over again.
| Buffy The Vampire Slayer | |
|
|
This is on my list of shows to watch next – only about 10 years after everyone else. I’m not only a follower, I’m a slow to follow follower – which is double awesome.

30 Rock: Seasons 1 & 2
Obviously there is no “complete series” yet because 30 Rock is still running. But if you didn’t get on board with this show when it started (like me), now is a great time to get caught up. Tina Fey is hilarious as Liz Lemon!

The Office: Seasons 1 – 4 Collection
If, like my mother, you have been living under a rock, you may not have seen The Office yet. In which case, you are truly missing out on the joy of “that’s what she said” and “Jim and Pam” Dwight and OH MY GOD WHY ARE YOU NOT WATCHING THIS SHOW ALREADY?!?! The Office – Season One for starters…
What did I forget?

I’m going to mention Sports Night again. Trust me, it’s not about sports. It features an amazing cast (Felicity Huffman, Robert Guillaume, Peter Krause, Josh Charles) and spectacular writing (Aaron Sorkin).
Another one that we enjoyed is The Pretender. It never had a chance, really; it was always on Fri/Sat night, but it was a good show.
@SciFi Dad, I actually used to watch Sports Night! You’re right, it was a good show.
Six Feet Under was amazing and definitely worth watching, if you haven’t already seen it. Also, Dexter. (I think I get more obsessed with cable shows.)
@Sybil Law, ooh – I do need to add Six Feet Under to the list. I watched a few episodes once but never had the chance to get into it.
@Sybil Law, ooh I LOVED Six Feet Under!!
I totally agree with SciFi Dad and Sybil! Six Feet Under would have been my first recommendation, oddly enough.
I also recommend Dead Like Me and the British comedy series Coupling.
@Hilly, I’ve heard about Coupling somewhere, but I don’t remember where.
@Miss Britt, If you decide to watch it, I have it!
So far I’ve bought my daughter 4 seasons of Charmed and she just LOVES it! I wish they would sell Two and 1/2 men on DVD cause I would damn sure buy those suckers up!
Ooooh yes! Charmed is awseome! So is Angel!
@Hilly, do I have to get all the way through Buffy before I’ll get Angel?
@Miss Britt, You have to get through at least Season 3 to get it, probably yes. After that, Angel can pretty much stand on its own but it is better to watch it in conjunction with Buffy as they sometimes do crossovers!
@Robina, I used to watch Charmed for the first little bit.
@Miss Britt, Charmed was indeed cute
EVERYONE should get the dvd’s for season 1 and 2 of Friday Night Lights, the tv series. It is seriously the best show your not watching.
@ballerinatoes, that is Jared’s FAVORITE show! LOL
WEEEEEEEDS!!!!
Every day I drink an iced coffee in hopes I’ll be skinny like Nancy Botwin.
p.s. It doesn’t work.
@Karen Sugarpants, damn these cable shows!
Actually, it’s the cable shows that are perfect for DVD because I don’t have to pay for the channels and can just wait until you guys tell me something is good.
Weeds. Got it. Iced Coffee. Check.
@Miss Britt, you should know it’s not something you can watch while the kids are still awake.
I would say “Lost” so everyone who’s missed it up till now has the summer to catch up and watch the final season…
xo
True Blood
Big Love
The Tudors
I’m a huge premium cable fan. Clearly.
Oh… House too!
I’m going to watch the Tudors seasons next because I saw a couple of episodes and it’s pretty good.
My faves are:
Gilmore Girls
La Femme Nikita
House
United States of Tara (although I missed the first season and have to go back)
I loved Buffy for a long time but never got into Angel. My sister became a crazed Buffy fan and kind of ended it for me. I didn’t know there were Buffy cruises before she went on one!
Some of my favs have been mentioned like..
FNLights
Tudors
True Blood
Big Love
United States of Tara
I also like..
Dexter
Entourage
The L Word
AND YES I do watch way too much tv
More..this year I started watching Bones & House and I they have grown on me..maybe enough to watch previous seasons.
We have Weeds, Entourage and the L Word on our Netflix list. We also have Battlestar Galactica on there for later (like #60 in our queue). I love getting the DVDs in the mail and having a mini-marathon.
My wife loves both Friends (she has all 10 seasons on DVD) and Gilmore Girls (she has none on DVD).
Weeds is my favorite, and I own the first 3 seasons on Blu-Ray. I also am in the process of collecting all 5 seasons of Get Smart on DVD.
And of course, I am current with all Simpsons and Family Guy on DVD.
Oh and How I Met Your Mother…. first 3 seasons.
